Well it’s been an exciting week, as it always is whenever renowned small dog clothes designer Susan Lanci releases a new fashion piece for chihuahuas and other small breeds of dogs! This time, she’s really outdone herself with the exotic leopard dog muff jacket (pictured left).

For those who don’t know and may be wondering exactly who this Suan Lanci character is, she’s a woman with a small army of adorable yorkies who wanted to dress her little snuggle bugs up in cute clothes, but just couldn’t find anything that looked good or fit properly on her yorkies. So she set out to design clothes for her dogs, herself.

Dog apparel for small dogs is a real hobby for some today, including your truly. Having recently just moved up from Mexico to Canada, I am pleased to see so many little doggies wearing their fashion dog apparel for smaller dogs on the streets and in the windows of so many houses! Something that twists me up inside and makes me feel so sad is when I see a gorgeous little dog wearing her cute apparel for little dogs on the street, but that has an owner who is paying no attention whatsoever to her and is on the cell phone, and her dog is running around and peeing on things and trying to attack every other dog that walks by.

I feel sorry for these dogs because, even though they look super cute in their dog apparel for small dogs, they are such a mess, psychologically speaking. It pains me whenever I see these dogs that are so antisocial and have no clue how to interact with other dogs and just be a DOG, sniffing and wagging tails with the other dogs, with her owner just standing there saying “oh, yeah, she’s like that….” Oh, I hate it! Chihuahua clothes and yorkie apparel, and all of this small dog clothing is for us pet owners much more than it is for our dogs, if we’re honest, and it can in no way be a substitution for proper guidance and the leadership your dog needs from you. Left to their own devices and just their chihuahua clothes, a lot of dogs spin out of control in this strange, human world we make them live in today, with us.

So please, please, PLEASE keep this in mind when you’re shopping for dog apparel for small dogs at the Chihuahua Shop. I know YOU probably understand your dog and her needs and how to fulfill her and that chihuahua clothes and dog apparel is for show and for fun and that dogs need a lot more than food and fashion in order to stay happy; but stand up for the dogs of other people when you see negligent owners on “walks” with their dogs (can you tell I have an issue with this?-lol), who aren’t really “there” with their dogs and are just spacing out and doing the obligatory five minute pee break routine with their dog for the 100th time in a row, probably. It’s a major emerging trend, having a chihuahua fashion dog walking beside you on a leash or tucked under your arm as you walk through the busy mall of a major cosmopolitan city, today, and it’s probably due in part to the ever-increasing popularity of the chihuahua clothes that owners of these little guys are flocking to in droves right now. These little fashion chihuahua doggies seem to be coming out of the woodwork where I live, and it’s almost freaking me out a bit!

Now, the Chihuahua Shop carries a lot of small dog fashion clothes for giving your chihuahua pup that injection of extra chihuahua style. Whereas some owners will be watching those fashion show dogs strutting their stuff in their chihuahua clothes down the runway on television, others will have their chihuahua dogs all spiffed up in chihuahua fashion dogs outfits there, right in front of them, with their little chi prancing around and ready to make it big in the Broadway spotlight with the right training. These are the people who take fashionable dogs seriously and buy all the fashion dog accessories they can find for their chihuahuas and their yorkies and their Maltese pups, and if anyone is going to be famous in the land of chihuahuas and these other small breed dogs, it’s them.

But lately, I’ve been spotting a few chihuahua clothes fashion fanatics who could almost be said to be taking the whole fashionable dogs thing a little too far. Down here in the Puerto Vallarta area of Mexico where I’m living right now, it’s bloody hot, and it’s not usually the type of climate you’ll want to dress your chihuahua up in any sort of seriously heavy chihuahua clothing if you can help it. Where you’ll see a lot of people getting their chihuahua fashion dogs fix is indoors, in the heavily air conditioned rooms where their chihuahuas are down on the floor, in their little chihuahua dog beds, resting and inactive, and otherwise shivering and shaking to death without their little dog fashion outfits on their back. You don’t see a lot a chihuahuas wearing their chihuahua sweaters outside in the heat, and thank god!–except for lately, perhaps with the increasing popularity of the Beverly Hills Chihuahua scene in Puerto Vallarta, I’m seeing chihuahuas dressed up in layers of fashion forward chihuahuas clothing, and it’s crazy!

I’ve seen at least five different chihuahuas dressed up in three or more layers of chihuahua clothes in the past week alone, and while I am fully a fan of dog fashion, when you’re layering clothes over clothes with chihuahua accessories on your little dog like this in the heat, when it’s an oven outside right now, this August of 2011, that’s really pushing the boundaries of what’s considered humane treatment of an animal if you ask me! I know they mean well, but these little hairy chihuahua buggers have it rough in the heat like this without all that insulating fashion dogs clothing covering them up!

So please, if you’re going to make your chihuahua into a fashion dog with his little chihuahua clothes, do so responsibly! I know you, as someone who reads this chihuahua fashion blog, would not make this mistake, but if you see anyone who’s really pushing it with too much fashion dog accessories and clothing on their dogs this summer, ask them what on Earth they’re doing

If you’ve got a maltese and you take him to the office and he’s got little clothes on, everyone is going to want to come over and pet that dog. If you’re walking along the street on a little walk with your dog, and you pass by other dog owners, they won’t be able to keep from gushing about how cute your dog looks. If you’ve got a yorkie and you dress him up in tiny outfits for yorkies, and even if you’re just at home and you have guests over who have just popped in, they’re not going to be able to resist bending down and petting your little dog and commenting on how cute your little furball is!

I’ve really been noticing lately that there are few things as irresistible as a little dog wearing small dog clothing. This fashion is everywhere today, and it’s wedging its way into the culture one outfit at a time. You’ve got shirts for little dogs, you’ve got smaller dog clothes for the little breeds like chihuahuas, you even see them showing up in the movies more and more as our pets share the spotlight with their human actor counterparts. And you’ve got online boutiques with dog clothing popping up left and right, with new ones every week it seems.

These dog clothes take the natural cuteness of these little dogs and they amp it up… it’s like chicken soup crack for the adorable dog’s soul! These little dog outfits make it nearly impossible for anybody to ignore your dog, so I definitely don’t recommend them if you’re trying to keep to yourself and you’re having a crappy day or something and you just want to be left alone–do not dress up your dog in small clothing in this case because everyone is going to want to come over and talk to you and it’s going to be a situation where the two of you become an attention magnet.

That said, if you do want attention, there’s nothing that breaks the ice more consistently and easy than chihuahua clothing on a little dog. Even as someone who thought it was ridiculous, small dogs wearing their funky fashion apparel was very hard to resist commenting on, either to my friend I was with or directly to the owner herself. There’s something about these little dog outfits for small dogs… they’re adorable, they’re cute, they’re cuddly–it’s INSANE!

So small dog fashion is everywhere these days, and even though it’s slowing down with the economy a bit, it’s still very much thriving. You’ll see the summer dog shirts for smaller dogs everywhere now as the chihuahuas and yorkies get out more and walk more on the streets now in the sunlight of the summer days and they shed the heavier dog costumes like the coats and sweaters in favor of the lighter shirts and summer fashion.
