Ever since I first adopted my chihuahuas a few years back, I’ve had a soft spot for toy dog clothing and the chihuahua clothes I love to dress up my little doggies with. For me, small dog clothing is my favorite way of really externalizing my chihuahua’s personality for others to see and “get” immediately, and to just have my own fun with dressing her up and living in a bit of a chihuahua fantasy land! But recently, I ran into a situation at puppy training class with a new chihuahua rescue I’m fostering right now where toy dog clothes were actually getting in the way!

So this chihuahua rescue I took in a few weeks ago, he has a lot of potential to be a chihuahua superstar: he’s very attentive, he’s super obedient, and he loves wearing his toy dog outfits. So I enlisted him in puppy training classes and have been taking him three times per week to his classes with him dressed up in his chihuahua clothing.

The problem is not with my chihuahua pup or any of the other dogs: they’re all super friendly and they get along famously. This bizarre problem has to do with the other dog owners and my little chihuahua doggie’s toy dog fashion that I dress him in: his toy dog clothing is drawing too much attention from the other owners in the class and they’re actually getting distracted from the exercises we’re supposed to be doing and it’s interfering with the entire class. It’s insanity!

I go to these dog training classes with my chihuahua dressed up in his toy doggie clothing, and I almost feel like I’m trapped in a zombie movie or something with all of these people coming after me and my dog who simply can’t control themselves and keep from coming after us to touch him and talk to me! It’s insanity! Combining this little chihuahua with his tiny chihuahua dog clothes is proving to be too much for these other owners to handle! They see my little Winston in his cool toy dog apparel and it’s like gravity pulling them away from their training exercises with their own dog: they have to come over and talk to me and comment on how cute my chihuahua is in his toy dog clothing and how he reminds them of this other dog they once had, and this and that… it’s madness, I say.

I like to use chihuahua dog clothing to help dogs and people, not interfere with them, so for the last two classes, I’ve actually left my little chihuahua pup’s toy dog costumes and small dog coats off, in the car, just so that he isn’t quite as much of a draw. It’s been helping, as the other owners are doing a better job of concentrating on their work, but now my little Winston isn’t getting his training while wearing his small dog coats and his little dog clothing, which isn’t ideal because I want that association to be there. Perhaps I’ll have to dress him back up in his toy dog clothing after a few more sessions and see if the other owners can behave themselves.

I’m almost hesitant to do this because I know that whenever you dress up a chihuahua in clothing for toy dogs, it’s like giving the world an invitation to come over and touch your dog and squeal with delight and remark over how cute your doggie is! And then I have to almost get into that “alright bitch, back the f!*# away from my dog!”-mode just to stop all the commotion and continue with what I was wanting to do. I don’t like having to go there, but sometimes duty calls, you know?

Haha! When you live around dog lovers who probably have more clothes for small dogs than they do for themselves, you get into some interesting conversations about chihuahua clothes and other costumes and clothes for little dogs. And the shirts for smaller dogs like chihuahuas and Maltese pups you’ll find today, even in the major pet stores, are getting rather trendy and fashion-tastic! Clothing for small dogs has never been as stylish and funky as it is right now, and if you ask me, clothes for small dogs SHOULD be funky and freaky and cool like this. No longer do we have to settle for boring chihuahua attire or the lazy yorkie fashion that the designers were putting out years ago. Today, we have these awesome, imaginative Maltese clothes that rival Lady Gaga’s outfits! And that is saying a lot

The small chihuahua dog clothes the customers of the Chihuahua Shop reflect this sentiment as well: it’s the crazy, freaky fashion for small dogs that is selling out, over the more traditional, formal dog clothing today, and it has been this way ever since I started that store. The outfits for small dogs that people crave to dress their little dogs up in are the ones that stand out, catch your eye, and either shock you outright or make you explode with uncontrollable laughter for minutes on end. And for the sake of our chihuahuas and or little toy dogs of every breed, I think this is pretty cool because it means they are going to be getting more attention and affection from their owners!

I always get excited when a small dog owner strikes up a conversation with me about designer dog coats because not only do we have some killer ones at the Chihuahua Clothes Shop, I had the chance to take stroll through what some would consider the American capital of smaller dogs: New York City. Believe it or not, there are a staggering number of little dogs in that city, and I was able to spend some time there with my chihuahua and two other small dogs I was fostering at the time, this past winter and soak up the sight of all the little dogs walking by in their custom dog coats and their fashionable personalized dog coats from the boutique dog stores in Manhattan. And holy cow, what an eye-opener it was!

I have new seen so many leather dog coats in my life. Central Park was like the luxury dog coats mecca, with mini schnauzers and french bulldogs sporting the latest in pet fashion, and what seemed like armies of chihuahuas and yorkies I passed by that wore designer coats for dogs. I thought L.A. was a hotbed of little dog apparel, but New York City put the city of angels to shame, at least on this trip!

I witnessed some of the most elaborate winter coats for dogs I’ve ever seen. And some of the custom whippet dog coats I saw were absolutely gorgeous in their design and their build quality. I also got to see a whole lot of pink dog coats for a team of Maltese dogs in training outside of a pet training facility in lower Manhattan, and, of course, when you visit one of those, you are going to see a pile of small doggie coats on the back of nearly every smaller dog pulling up in passenger’s seat of his owners car in the winter time, being dropped off for his day’s dog training class. It was almost unbelievable, the sheer volume of dogs there were that were outfitted in the latest designer dog fashion. This is a good city to be a dog!

I have a real soft spot in my heart for little dogs, and so I’m happy to stock some of the best small dog coats I’ve ever seen here at the Chihuahua Shop. They come in sizes for nearly every breed in dog, despite the store’s name, and like I said, they really are some of the best dog coats I’ve ever seen.

If you’re really into the designer fashion dog coats from the super upscale brands like Gucci, Prada, Versace, etc… that’s a little beyond the price range I focus on for the store, but you can check them out over at GW Little if that’s what you’re looking for, for your little dog. I find that for most small dog owners, fleece dog coats aren’t really an option. The smaller breeds of dogs cool off much faster and more easily than the bigger breeds of dogs, and so we pick up little fleece doggie coats and sweaters for our chihuahuas and our yorkies, our Maltese and our shih tzu. In particular, I’ve found that fleece coats for dogs are particularly effective at keeping little dogs warm. I used to hike around in the mountains of Canada with Namaste and few other chihuahuas I was fostering at the time. This would have normally been impossible: it would have been way too cold for the chihuahuas to be able to handle. But wearing their little chihuahua dog fleeces, they stayed toasty warm with that extra layer of fur to protect them from the crisp air and insulate them a bit and lock in their body heat. Their little fido fleece coats worked great for them!

Initially, I actually bought their fleece dog jacket coats at a local pet store. This was long before I knew anything about the elaborate, extensive collection of boutique small dog clothing stores online that we have today, but there was a decent selection of fleeces for little dogs at the big pet stores where I was at the time. Actually, it was kind of nice to be able to take my dogs in with me, into the store, and try the clothes out right there before I purchased them. If there’s one thing I don’t like about shopping online, it’s that you can’t really do that.

Browsing the isles of the local dog store, there were all these fleece dog jacket pattern coats with their cute, clever little messages on the back and their fashionable cuts and designs. Typically, when I shop for chihuahua coats at the local brick and mortar stores, the selection is rather limited, but when it comes fleece dog sweater and fleece dog vest outfits for little dogs, there’s a quite a bit of variety–more than any other type of dog clothing you’ll find at the bigger, mainstream dog and pet stores in the big cities. So you can find some quality warm dog clothing at these stores, which is nice for a change.

That said, I still very much favor the online pet shopping experience today when I’m looking for my small dog clothing. Fleece jackets for dogs and fleece jumpers, for when you want to exercise with your dog and you want to run with him outdoors when it’s cool out or even downright cold, really are a must when you have smaller dogs like chihuahuas or yorkies, and there are some very good stores online today like the Chihuahua Shop that sell quality pet fleece outfits at reasonable prices. And the selection in these online little dog clothing stores far exceeds that of the local shops where you live; I can almost guarantee it.

If you can find 10 different brands of a certain type of polar fleece dog coat for you chihuahua, you’re almost certain to be able to find 100 brands of it online. On the internet, you have the advantage of being able to shop the toy dog coat boutiques that exist all around the world, and so your selection expands massively. This is why today, whenever I have a friend from back up in Canada or over in the UK asking me for advice on where they can find a dog fleece jacket for their little Maltese pup or their shivering chihuahuas, I tell them to browse the small pet clothing stores online, first, to find what they’re looking for to help their small dogs.

Like I said, you can find quality warm dog coats at the local pet stores, but the selection is limited compared to what you’ll find at the online dog clothes stores selection, with their massive wardrobe collections of small dog coats for the winter time, autumn, and other cool times and situations you’ll find yourself in as you travel along the strange, winding path of life with your little dogs! So if you’re you’re wondering how to find quality fleece dog coats for small dogs, start at the Chihuahua Shop, there, and you’ll be starting at the top in terms of quality and value, and you’ll save yourself a lot of time. We stock some great small dog coats at the Chihuahua Shop, here, but my I recently got a lesson in these warm dog coats from my neighbor here in town. She has this chihuahua I always see dressed up in a chihuahua coat of some sort–no matter where I see him. Well I was out yesterday, and I was a little bit shocked to see my friend with her little guy out on the beach, with him wearing one of his fashion dog coats! I should say that I was shocked because of how hot it is down here when you’re out on the beach and it’s the middle of the day: it’s scorching. But there he was, this little dude, out in the sand, running and ripping around from sand castle to beach chair to owner to the other chihuahuas out on the beach at the time. I thought it was insanity.

I asked my friend what she was thinking, dressing her dog up in chihuahua clothes–a dog coat no less–during the middle of the day and when out on the beach. I mean, I know my chihuahuas can cool down and get cold sometimes and need their chihuahua coats at times, but this is not usually one of those times!

As it turns out, her little “Paco” is cold almost all the time and needs some sort of dog clothing on him, almost all the time, just so he can stay warm. Apparently he’s not sick or anything, but he’s just always been like that, in perpetual need of his dog coats for smaller dogs. The poor little bugger; I can’t imagine being out on the sun-drenched beach with my winter parka on, but I guess it’s different for this little chihuahua dog and it’s actually more enjoyable for him this way. Strange, but true.

All around town in Sayulita lately, I’ve actually been seeing a number of chihuahuas out with their small doggie coats on, lately. Their owners are buying them the all weather dog coats for the rainy season we’re in the middle of, down here. And I’m also spotting a lot of new high visibility dog coats on some of the bigger dogs around town, with owners making sure their pooches are bright and easy to see when it really starts pouring rain and it’s coming down like cats and you know what! In this town, the sidewalks weren’t exactly built with walking pedestrians in mind and you basically have to walk along the side of the road (very typical in Mexico) if you want to go anywhere on foot or take your dog for a spin and give him his exercise.

I’ve also been looking at some of the fleece dog coats and the small dog vests I’ve seen over at GW Little lately, because they are pretty nice and I’ve been wanting to bring a few models of them over to the Chihuahua Clothes Store, here. Last year during Pet Fashion Week in New York City, I had the chance to sit in on the dog fashion runway shows, and I was able to catch a glimpse of the coats for small dogs that were coming down the line in this pet fashion industry and that we now carry here at the Chihuahua Clothes Shop. Chihuahua coats and jackets for other smaller dogs have been one of our best sellers at the shop, and I have to say that part of that is due to the hard work the designers put into their dog clothing work.

On the runways of Pet Fashion Week, I saw the whole gamut of doggy coats for little dogs: there were dog coats for winter and designer dog coats from luxury brands like Gucci, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton. There were cool dog coats for small dogs like chihuahuas and yorkies and Maltese puppies. There were puppy coats of every style and fashion and cut and size you could imagine, being sold at the doggie fashion vendor stands outside the runway rooms. Small dog coats were very well represented at the show!

As you’d expect, it was the coats for toy breeds that claimed most of the attention, as it’s not so much specataters’ fascination with the doggie clothes as much as the little dogs themselves that won them the lion’s share of people’s conversations. The coats for chihuahuas and the other chihuahua clothes were a very hot topic among the small dog owners, with people snapping photos and shooting video to capture the future of dog coat fashion coming down the pipe in the pet industry.

The event was a blast to attend. Not only did I get to be a part of something that raises a lot of awareness for dogs and their rights here in western culture, which is very, very cool; but I got to see all the new accessories for small dogs on their way to the online dog boutiques and specialty pet stores this year. Before I started the Chihuahua Shop, I would look around for cheap dog clothes online and in the the offline, real-world dog clothing stores to find inexpensive chihuahua clothing for my little foster dogs to keep them warm at night and to dress them up a bit to make cuter “adopt-me!” pictures. I’d search all over for these clothes, looking for clothes for dogs cheap on Google and everywhere else I could look online, and I just didn’t see very much that really spoke to that inner dog-lover-fashion-crazed person that I wanted to express through the chihuahua clothes my little dogs wore, without spending a pile of money on a little frilly dog tutu or a basic dog sweater.

In fact, I still find that when I look around online, asside from places like the LoveLongLong dog clothes store, that has cool small dog coats for relatively low prices and cheap raincoats for dogs that actually look half-decent, unlike the bulk of discount dog clothing I see at a lot of the other shops I used to buy from. They have a good store, and at the discount end of the chihuahua clothes spectrum, it’s a store I try to emulate.

It’s actually very hard to sell low cost pet clothes today, with the international customs fees and shipping costs that really make a dent in your pocket book: it’s not always easy. But at the Chihuahua Shop, we too have our share of cheap dog clothing for those looking for a more frugal approach to dog fashion. Those cool dog bandanas and other little accessories and clothes for dogs on the cheap are arriving each week, and we’re adding the new inventory to the store as fast as we can, because as much as I personally prefer the nicer chihuahua clothes, I believe dog clothing should be available to everyone, even those with only a little extra cash to pamper their little chiwawa pup with.

Wholesale Dog Clothing

If you’re really looking for a deal on your small dog’s clothing and you’re looking around for wholesale chihuahua clothes, for example, I’d recommend you check out either the Lovelonglong dog clothes store or the DogDug dog clothing store.

Both of these stores give you insanely low wholesale prices on their dog clothing if you buy within certain parameters and your shipment meets their conditions, and you can score some absolutely insane deals on cheap dog clothing. If you’re dead set on dressing up your pooch into that fashionable dog you’ve always wanted in your need to find your dog clothes wholesale priced before you can consider buying them, those two stores will be your best bet, if you ask me.

I wish I could say we have the lowest priced awesome chihuahua fashion here at our Shop, but right now, I have more of a boutique chihuahua fashion focus for the store and I’m working on finding the best, highest quality chihuahua outfits for the store right now, and the wholesale price option just isn’t possible for us right now. But again, Lovelonglong Dog Clothing is awesome in my experience, and while I haven’t tried them out personally, I have heard some good things about the DogDug, so you might want to check them out.

At the Chihuahua Shop, we do have some discount dog dresses and chihuahua clothes on sale now for the season, and they’re a steal for what you’re getting quality-wise. Clothes for dogs that are cheap are not always easy to find in any vaguely appealing form, but they are out there and you can find them if you look hard enough or you follow my advice, above. I used to think small dog coats were a joke. I would scoff at the notion of a dog (which already has a coat of hair, does he not?) wearing human-invented fashion. Then, in an unusual twist of fate, and ended up taking care of two chihuahuas that I eventually came to call my own. I scoff no more. In fact, it was a matter of mere weeks after first getting them that I ordered my first small dog clothes from a chihuahua clothes boutique!

So what the heck changed my mind so quickly? It was the two chihuahuas: they would start to shiver and seek out the warmest spot in the room whenever they’d been in a room for a while and hadn’t just been prancing around down the sidewalks on a walk with me! As much as I thought that clothes for small dogs were an absolute joke, I couldn’t deny that my two little dogs were not exactly comfortable after they’d been indoors for a while and were just lounging around (which is the official chihuahua sport, by the way!) So I conceded: I bought a pair of chihuahua coats from the little dog coat boutique. And I haven’t looked back since!

When talking with other chihuahua owners today, we chat about the entire gamut of dog clothes, from the doggy parkas and chihuahua ski jackets you see at the Chihuahua Shop, to the other winter dog coats for small dogs the warm dog coats and sweaters you find on the shelves at the local Petco and other brick and mortar pet stores in town. It’s a little freaky when you get talking with your neighbor about her prize-winning chihuahua and how they own matching sets of clothing–both her and her dog!–and how they never leave the house without first coordinating their outfits. For me, I haven’t quite reach that point with my small dogs yet, but I know there are some aspiring Paris Hilton-types out there who could probably put me and my little chiwawa to shame when it comes to dressing to kill for the chihuahua fashion spotlight!

This summer, it’s been a blast to see all the new summer dog coats coming into the store, here. I’ve been getting a lot of questions about waterproof dog coats for chihuahuas, as apparently there are a lot of owners who love to walk and dance and play in the rain with their small dogs, who obviously want to keep their little pets warm and snuggly while doing so! So just for those of you looking for such a small dog coat, we’ve brought in the chihuahua raincoat in a variety of colors, so you can get your four-pawed puddle splashing party going on, and semi-convince everyone else on the street that you’ve lost it, haha!–don’t worry, it’s one of my favorite things to do!

Apart from the heavier and rain-repellent small dog coats, there are the more funky and fashionable coats for smaller dogs that you’ll find in most chihuahua clothing stores, as well. If you’re going for the whole K-9 fahionista poochy-Gaga look for your dog, you’ll need your pink dog coats and your crazy wasp-coat for your little dog, and those other cray dog fashion coats that grab your attention like a fashionable attention magnet. These dogtacular clothes are all over the place online, and I do my best to stock the creme de la creme of them in the Chihuahua Clothes Shop.

The one other option you have if you want small dogs coats for your chihuahuas is to make your own. Now, I’m all for do-it-yourself projects when it comes to your chihuahuas, but I’m really not the sewing type, and so I’ll leave it to the budding chihuahua fashion artists at YouTube to guide you, if this option strikes an inner fashion cord with you.
