Coats for Small Dogs

Last year during Pet Fashion Week in New York City, I had the chance to sit in on the dog fashion runway shows, and I was able to catch a glimpse of the coats for small dogs that were coming down the line in this pet fashion industry and that we now carry here at the Chihuahua Clothes Shop. Chihuahua coats and jackets for other smaller dogs have been one of our best sellers at the shop, and I have to say that part of that is due to the hard work the designers put into their dog clothing work.

On the runways of Pet Fashion Week, I saw the whole gamut of doggy coats for little dogs: there were dog coats for winter and designer dog coats from luxury brands like Gucci, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton. There were cool dog coats for small dogs like chihuahuas and yorkies and Maltese puppies. There were puppy coats of every style and fashion and cut and size you could imagine, being sold at the doggie fashion vendor stands outside the runway rooms. Small dog coats were very well represented at the show!

As you’d expect, it was the coats for toy breeds that claimed most of the attention, as it’s not so much specataters’ fascination with the doggie clothes as much as the little dogs themselves that won them the lion’s share of people’s conversations. The coats for chihuahuas and the other chihuahua clothes were a very hot topic among the small dog owners, with people snapping photos and shooting video to capture the future of dog coat fashion coming down the pipe in the pet industry.

The event was a blast to attend. Not only did I get to be a part of something that raises a lot of awareness for dogs and their rights here in western culture, which is very, very cool; but I got to see all the new accessories for small dogs on their way to the online dog boutiques and specialty pet stores this year. If you ever have the chance to go, I highly recommend it!

Puppy coats help keep little dogs warm at night and when living in cooler places. As owners, we get these little coats for our little puppies to make them more comfortable and warm, and sometimes to give them a bit of doggie fashion flair. These little coats for dogs counteract the tendency that chihuahuas and other little dogs have to cool off quickly when not being active and moving around.

If you’ve ever had a smaller dog like a chihuahua, then you know how much little dogs shiver and shake when they’re not running around. Especially at night, you’ll notice how much chihuahuas and other little dogs love to burrow under the covers to try to keep warm with you:

And that’s exactly what chihuahua clothes and cheap and cute puppy coats are for: keeping your little dog warm. They’re little mini coats for puppies, typically made out of similar materials an in a comparable fashion to people coats, and you dress your little dog in them and they help your pooch out by keeping him a lot more warm and comfy.

There are actually some very cool, fashionable styles of these dog coats out there, if you look around in your local pet store or online through a dog coat store. After Paris Hilton set the chihuahua clothes fashion world on fire with her Tinkerbell, a lot of different styles dog clothing came flooding into the market, and a huge selection of puppy coats are now available.

Now, not every puppy coat is made the same: some are definitely more cool and funky and fashionable than others, and some are made to higher quality standards than others. God knows how many different little coats for puppies I’ve tried out that have basically fallen apart with just a couple of weeks of wear. But the upside is that this has allowed me the opportunity to test out quite a few different brands of puppy coats and find some really adorable ones that remain a staple in my chihuahuas’ clothes selection to this day.

Of all the places I’ve bought little coats for puppies, I’ve find the Chihuahua Shop to be the best. They seem to only carry the higher quality brands that won’t fall apart after just a couple weeks of wear.

If you’re looking for a good coat for your puppy, I recommend checking their store out at the banner link below. Chihuahua puppy coats do a great job of keeping little dogs comfortable and warm, and if you like the look of a brand of puppy jacket from another store, my advice is to try and see if you find a place that sells them with a warranty of some kind, but whatever coats you choose for your little young dogs, you’re going to be keeping him stylish and warm, and that’s always a good thing! Speak soon, dog lovers.

Coats for Dogs

If you live in a place where a lot of people own smaller dogs, you’re surely seeing a lot of dog coats and jackets these days on those small dogs. I take my dogs for a quite a few walks throughout the week, and on cooler days, I pass by a lot of owners with chihuahuas and other little dogs wearing puppy coats. The purpose of these coats for dogs is of course to keep your little dog warm in cooler climates, as smaller dogs tend to cool down easier and shiver more than bigger dogs. If you have a chihuahua for example, it helps to dress her up in clothes for chihuahuas, to compensate for her body’s tendency to shed heat a lot faster than other dogs.

I used to think this whole dog clothing thing was ridiculous, but I’ve changed my mind about this ever since I first became joint-owner of my friend’s chihuahua, and now I’m an advocate of chihuahua clothes because I see how much more comfortable they make my little dogs, allowing my little snuggle bugs to actually enjoy their walks when it’s cold out, instead being stuck in an uncomfortable, non-stop shiver-fest!

Living in Canada last year with my chihuahuas, I bought and tested out quite a few different clothes for my little dogs in the span of about six months. I had doggy snowsuits, puppy sweaters, and the entire warm end of the dog fashion industry that I was dressing up my little dogs with. One of the most useful chihuahua clothes I came across for my little female chi was this dog waterproof coat that would keep her dry whenever it was either raining or snowing. Canada is a cold place, and you can’t really afford to get wet when you’re outside and it’s freezing out! So when it was snowing, this little dog raincoat would keep the flakes off my chihuahua’s back and prevent them from melting on her and getting her wet; and in the spring and fall it would keep the rain off her back and keep her dry and warm on rainy days. This was one of the most useful dog coats and jackets I’ve ever had for my little Namaste, and I had her wear it almostbeige quilted gilet coats for dogs every day when the weather was lousy because it literally took her from a place of not really wanting to go out and walk when it was raining to almost feverishly jumping up on my lap whenever she’d sense that it was walk time–even when it was raining! This little doggy rain coat made a huge change in my chihuahua over the few months I had her wear it.

And of course in the winter, you have the little dog snowsuit to provide that extra warmth your little dog needs in the frigid cold. The snowsuits for dogs help combat the brutally cold weather you face in places with harsh winters, and if you couple them with four little dog boots for your pooch, your little dogs can actually enjoy walking in the winter time–something that is virtually impossible without the aid of these doggy coats and jackets if you’re living in a cooler climate. If you’re like me and you live in a cold place like Canada, then I really recommend you pick up a few dog jackets for winter weather if you have little dogs.

Coats for dogs: where to find them

Coats for dogs help your little dog stay warm when the weather isn’t cooperating. The coats keep help keep your pooch warm when you go out for a walk in the cold, and they help your little bundle of love stay a lot more comfortable while the two of you are out walking, or indoors if you live in a cooler building. You can find these dog jackets at your local pet store, or you can find them online. If you opt for the online option, I highly recommend checking out the Chihuahua Shop for finding fashionable and functional dog coats and jackets for your pets. And if you happen to have a favorite store of your own that you use that you think has great dog coats, make sure you leave a comment below to let us know about it! Speak soon, -Michelle

In my opinion, yes and no.  I was having a discussion recently with a chihuahua clothes loving friend who was expressing his opinion that chihuahuas are more difficult to socialize than other breeds of dogs, and that when people find cute little puppy clothes for cheap and then doll up their chihuahuas in those clothes, it only makes it even harder to properly socialize these little dogs.

I understood what he meant, but I disagree with my friend and want to share my opinion here.  I think chihuahuas are easy to socialize and that the key to doing so is to simply treat them like any other dog–even when you’ve gone to the puppy boutique and you dress your chihuahua up in cute chihuahua sweaters and other small dog clothing–and not treat them like the little baby-waybies that a lot of chihuahua owners see them as.  Treating them like a dog and giving them a decent amount of exercise just like I would any other type of dog has helped keep my two chihuahuas balanced and very social with people and dogs of every kind, including the burly pit bulls I’ve been fostering lately.

You can probably hear a little Cesar Millan coming through in this post, but what the Dog Whisperer says is true: in western cultures, little dogs are more often treated like babies than what they actually are: dogs.  I see it all the time amongst my friends and the friends they have: emotionally unbalanced owner is having some kind of emotional crisis (ie: a breakup) and decides to buy a cute little dog to fill the void.  She buys the little dog, buys the cute little chihuahua clothes to go with it, and dresses him up in all these crazy little dog costumes and adorable puppy sweaters.  On one level, it’s a beautiful thing we can do this and adorn our little pooches with our love like this.  But it’s almost a perfect recipe for screwing the poor little dog up if this is all we do, and we don’t make an effort to also provide what the dog needs (exercise, discipline, and then the affection [again, thank you Mr. Millan!] so that it’s earned and is perceived by the dog as a reward and not as “oh, they love me…  I can do no wrong in their eyes… I can get away with whatever I want! …etc).

I have seen too many chihuahua owners who buy all the little clothes for chihuahuas and dress up their chi pup and focus all this attention on the little dog, and then never take him for a walk (the fundamental dog activity that lets a dog feel like a dog).  I see the cutest chihuahuas on the planet with their high fashion and their haute couture “chiwawa clothes”, but the little itself dog is a psychological mess: it wants to nip and bite people and other dogs, and the owner hasn’t socialized the poor little puppy and let him be a dog because she was so caught up in showering him with affection and dressing him up in puppy coats, and now this little dog now has no clue how to interact with others of his own kind.  I don’t mean to be harsh here: I think most people like this truly love their dogs, but simply don’t understand dogs as an animal very well.  They don’t know what a dog’s needs are, and so they don’t provide for those needs, the needs that–yes–even little dogs have, and so the dog only receives affection (physical petting, food, water, ect…) without ever having to work with it and earn that stuff the way he would in his natural habitat within a pack of dogs…who haven’t solely been showered with affection and dressed up in the latest clothes for puppies.

What does any of this have to do with socialization?  It has everything to do with it: if an owner isn’t providing for his dog’s needs and is only dressing him up in the latest chihuahua fashion because he found some great puppy clothes for sale at the doggy boutique, that dog is likely to develop issues and become unbalanced, and unbalanced dogs have a very hard time being social with other dogs, both because they will tend to not want to socialize very much with other dogs, and other dogs will also not want to socialize with a dog that is exhibiting unstable behavior.  “Nature attacks weakness;” it doesn’t befriend it, you’ll notice if you watch.  And it has nothing to do with the dog wearing chihuahua clothes: it has to do with the state of mind the owner nurtured in that dog via the way he treated the little dog.  Finding puppy clothes for cheap and dressing your chihuahua up in them can help attract people to your chi and help you socialize him by increasing the frequency of interaction, but all of this has to be carried out in the right fashion if it’s going to go well.  Socialization is more about maintaining a balanced state of mind in the dog when meeting new people and dogs than it is merely finding everyone and every dog to interact with and plopping yourself in front of them, I think.

So you can make socializing your little dog much easier by working to keep him balanced.  By giving your little dog what he needs–what every dog needs: exercise (a proper walk); with discipline (making sure the dog is following you, the leader, on the walk and not pulling and just doing whatever he wants to do but is instead following you and your lead); and then the affection, to reward the good behavior.  The affection you give your little dog in those cute chihuahua clothes nurtures the state of mind he’s in, so it’s best to only ever give affection to a dog when he’s in a good, relaxed state of mind, who’s being sociable and not being a terror.  If he’s being unstable or trying to nip, do not give affection because that will actually be nurturing that state of mind and making things worse for the dog, sending the message to him “I like what you’re doing.  This is good: keep it up.”  This is one of the biggest mistakes dog owners make when working with difficult dogs: giving affection at the wrong time, and if you can walk away from this article with having just learned this one piece, I think you’ve gained something very valuable!

I think chihuahua clothes can help you socialize your dog with people because they tend to attract more people to your little dog, but you might find an exception when it comes to kids: those cute, cheap puppy clothes might actually work against your intention of keeping a good relationship between the kids and the little dogs, because little dog clothes make your dog look even cuter and therefore more attractive as a play toy for kids to run up to too fast and try to grab them in that excited way that kids do.  I know that chihuahua clothing is so damn cute, but you may want to factor this into your socialization “strategy” for your little dog if you find yourself in situations with a lot kids around, often!  Anyway, I hope this was helpful, I hope you find some puppy clothes for cheap and use them intelligently when socializing your dog, I hope you learned something new here, and I’ll be back here again soon with more news from the adorable but responsible world of chihuahua clothes 🙂 haha, take care.  -Michelle
