I always get excited when a small dog owner strikes up a conversation with me about designer dog coats because not only do we have some killer ones at the Chihuahua Clothes Shop, I had the chance to take stroll through what some would consider the American capital of smaller dogs: New York City. Believe it or not, there are a staggering number of little dogs in that city, and I was able to spend some time there with my chihuahua and two other small dogs I was fostering at the time, this past winter and soak up the sight of all the little dogs walking by in their custom dog coats and their fashionable personalized dog coats from the boutique dog stores in Manhattan. And holy cow, what an eye-opener it was!

I have new seen so many leather dog coats in my life. Central Park was like the luxury dog coats mecca, with mini schnauzers and french bulldogs sporting the latest in pet fashion, and what seemed like armies of chihuahuas and yorkies I passed by that wore designer coats for dogs. I thought L.A. was a hotbed of little dog apparel, but New York City put the city of angels to shame, at least on this trip!

I witnessed some of the most elaborate winter coats for dogs I’ve ever seen. And some of the custom whippet dog coats I saw were absolutely gorgeous in their design and their build quality. I also got to see a whole lot of pink dog coats for a team of Maltese dogs in training outside of a pet training facility in lower Manhattan, and, of course, when you visit one of those, you are going to see a pile of small doggie coats on the back of nearly every smaller dog pulling up in passenger’s seat of his owners car in the winter time, being dropped off for his day’s dog training class. It was almost unbelievable, the sheer volume of dogs there were that were outfitted in the latest designer dog fashion. This is a good city to be a dog!

I have a real soft spot in my heart for little dogs, and so I’m happy to stock some of the best small dog coats I’ve ever seen here at the Chihuahua Shop. They come in sizes for nearly every breed in dog, despite the store’s name, and like I said, they really are some of the best dog coats I’ve ever seen.

If you’re really into the designer fashion dog coats from the super upscale brands like Gucci, Prada, Versace, etc… that’s a little beyond the price range I focus on for the store, but you can check them out over at GW Little if that’s what you’re looking for, for your little dog. They have some gorgeous designer dog jackets and designer dog coats and I highly recommend them if you’re looking for quality designer dog coats, so check them out. I used to think small dog coats were a joke. I would scoff at the notion of a dog (which already has a coat of hair, does he not?) wearing human-invented fashion. Then, in an unusual twist of fate, and ended up taking care of two chihuahuas that I eventually came to call my own. I scoff no more. In fact, it was a matter of mere weeks after first getting them that I ordered my first small dog clothes from a chihuahua clothes boutique!

So what the heck changed my mind so quickly? It was the two chihuahuas: they would start to shiver and seek out the warmest spot in the room whenever they’d been in a room for a while and hadn’t just been prancing around down the sidewalks on a walk with me! As much as I thought that clothes for small dogs were an absolute joke, I couldn’t deny that my two little dogs were not exactly comfortable after they’d been indoors for a while and were just lounging around (which is the official chihuahua sport, by the way!) So I conceded: I bought a pair of chihuahua coats from the little dog coat boutique. And I haven’t looked back since!

When talking with other chihuahua owners today, we chat about the entire gamut of dog clothes, from the doggy parkas and chihuahua ski jackets you see at the Chihuahua Shop, to the other winter dog coats for small dogs the warm dog coats and sweaters you find on the shelves at the local Petco and other brick and mortar pet stores in town. It’s a little freaky when you get talking with your neighbor about her prize-winning chihuahua and how they own matching sets of clothing–both her and her dog!–and how they never leave the house without first coordinating their outfits. For me, I haven’t quite reach that point with my small dogs yet, but I know there are some aspiring Paris Hilton-types out there who could probably put me and my little chiwawa to shame when it comes to dressing to kill for the chihuahua fashion spotlight!

This summer, it’s been a blast to see all the new summer dog coats coming into the store, here. I’ve been getting a lot of questions about waterproof dog coats for chihuahuas, as apparently there are a lot of owners who love to walk and dance and play in the rain with their small dogs, who obviously want to keep their little pets warm and snuggly while doing so! So just for those of you looking for such a small dog coat, we’ve brought in the chihuahua raincoat in a variety of colors, so you can get your four-pawed puddle splashing party going on, and semi-convince everyone else on the street that you’ve lost it, haha!–don’t worry, it’s one of my favorite things to do!

Apart from the heavier and rain-repellent small dog coats, there are the more funky and fashionable coats for smaller dogs that you’ll find in most chihuahua clothing stores, as well. If you’re going for the whole K-9 fahionista poochy-Gaga look for your dog, you’ll need your pink dog coats and your crazy wasp-coat for your little dog, and those other cray dog fashion coats that grab your attention like a fashionable attention magnet. These dogtacular clothes are all over the place online, and I do my best to stock the creme de la creme of them in the Chihuahua Clothes Shop.

The one other option you have if you want small dogs coats for your chihuahuas is to make your own. Now, I’m all for do-it-yourself projects when it comes to your chihuahuas, but I’m really not the sewing type, and so I’ll leave it to the budding chihuahua fashion artists at YouTube to guide you, if this option strikes an inner fashion cord with you.
