I find that for most small dog owners, fleece dog coats aren’t really an option. The smaller breeds of dogs cool off much faster and more easily than the bigger breeds of dogs, and so we pick up little fleece doggie coats and sweaters for our chihuahuas and our yorkies, our Maltese and our shih tzu. In particular, I’ve found that fleece coats for dogs are particularly effective at keeping little dogs warm. I used to hike around in the mountains of Canada with Namaste and few other chihuahuas I was fostering at the time. This would have normally been impossible: it would have been way too cold for the chihuahuas to be able to handle. But wearing their little chihuahua dog fleeces, they stayed toasty warm with that extra layer of fur to protect them from the crisp air and insulate them a bit and lock in their body heat. Their little fido fleece coats worked great for them!

Initially, I actually bought their fleece dog jacket coats at a local pet store. This was long before I knew anything about the elaborate, extensive collection of boutique small dog clothing stores online that we have today, but there was a decent selection of fleeces for little dogs at the big pet stores where I was at the time. Actually, it was kind of nice to be able to take my dogs in with me, into the store, and try the clothes out right there before I purchased them. If there’s one thing I don’t like about shopping online, it’s that you can’t really do that.

Browsing the isles of the local dog store, there were all these fleece dog jacket pattern coats with their cute, clever little messages on the back and their fashionable cuts and designs. Typically, when I shop for chihuahua coats at the local brick and mortar stores, the selection is rather limited, but when it comes fleece dog sweater and fleece dog vest outfits for little dogs, there’s a quite a bit of variety–more than any other type of dog clothing you’ll find at the bigger, mainstream dog and pet stores in the big cities. So you can find some quality warm dog clothing at these stores, which is nice for a change.

That said, I still very much favor the online pet shopping experience today when I’m looking for my small dog clothing. Fleece jackets for dogs and fleece jumpers, for when you want to exercise with your dog and you want to run with him outdoors when it’s cool out or even downright cold, really are a must when you have smaller dogs like chihuahuas or yorkies, and there are some very good stores online today like the Chihuahua Shop that sell quality pet fleece outfits at reasonable prices. And the selection in these online little dog clothing stores far exceeds that of the local shops where you live; I can almost guarantee it.

If you can find 10 different brands of a certain type of polar fleece dog coat for you chihuahua, you’re almost certain to be able to find 100 brands of it online. On the internet, you have the advantage of being able to shop the toy dog coat boutiques that exist all around the world, and so your selection expands massively. This is why today, whenever I have a friend from back up in Canada or over in the UK asking me for advice on where they can find a dog fleece jacket for their little Maltese pup or their shivering chihuahuas, I tell them to browse the small pet clothing stores online, first, to find what they’re looking for to help their small dogs.

Like I said, you can find quality warm dog coats at the local pet stores, but the selection is limited compared to what you’ll find at the online dog clothes stores selection, with their massive wardrobe collections of small dog coats for the winter time, autumn, and other cool times and situations you’ll find yourself in as you travel along the strange, winding path of life with your little dogs! So if you’re you’re wondering how to find quality fleece dog coats for small dogs, start at the Chihuahua Shop, there, and you’ll be starting at the top in terms of quality and value, and you’ll save yourself a lot of time. We stock some great small dog coats at the Chihuahua Shop, here, but my I recently got a lesson in these warm dog coats from my neighbor here in town. She has this chihuahua I always see dressed up in a chihuahua coat of some sort–no matter where I see him. Well I was out yesterday, and I was a little bit shocked to see my friend with her little guy out on the beach, with him wearing one of his fashion dog coats! I should say that I was shocked because of how hot it is down here when you’re out on the beach and it’s the middle of the day: it’s scorching. But there he was, this little dude, out in the sand, running and ripping around from sand castle to beach chair to owner to the other chihuahuas out on the beach at the time. I thought it was insanity.

I asked my friend what she was thinking, dressing her dog up in chihuahua clothes–a dog coat no less–during the middle of the day and when out on the beach. I mean, I know my chihuahuas can cool down and get cold sometimes and need their chihuahua coats at times, but this is not usually one of those times!

As it turns out, her little “Paco” is cold almost all the time and needs some sort of dog clothing on him, almost all the time, just so he can stay warm. Apparently he’s not sick or anything, but he’s just always been like that, in perpetual need of his dog coats for smaller dogs. The poor little bugger; I can’t imagine being out on the sun-drenched beach with my winter parka on, but I guess it’s different for this little chihuahua dog and it’s actually more enjoyable for him this way. Strange, but true.

All around town in Sayulita lately, I’ve actually been seeing a number of chihuahuas out with their small doggie coats on, lately. Their owners are buying them the all weather dog coats for the rainy season we’re in the middle of, down here. And I’m also spotting a lot of new high visibility dog coats on some of the bigger dogs around town, with owners making sure their pooches are bright and easy to see when it really starts pouring rain and it’s coming down like cats and you know what! In this town, the sidewalks weren’t exactly built with walking pedestrians in mind and you basically have to walk along the side of the road (very typical in Mexico) if you want to go anywhere on foot or take your dog for a spin and give him his exercise.

I’ve also been looking at some of the fleece dog coats and the small dog vests I’ve seen over at GW Little lately, because they are pretty nice and I’ve been wanting to bring a few models of them over to the Chihuahua Clothes Store, here.
