It’s a major emerging trend, having a chihuahua fashion dog walking beside you on a leash or tucked under your arm as you walk through the busy mall of a major cosmopolitan city, today, and it’s probably due in part to the ever-increasing popularity of the chihuahua clothes that owners of these little guys are flocking to in droves right now. These little fashion chihuahua doggies seem to be coming out of the woodwork where I live, and it’s almost freaking me out a bit!

Whereas some owners will be watching those fashion show dogs strutting their stuff in their chihuahua clothes down the runway on television, others will have their chihuahua dogs all spiffed up in chihuahua fashion dogs outfits there, right in front of them, with their little chi prancing around and ready to make it big in the Broadway spotlight with the right training. These are the people who take fashionable dogs seriously and buy all the fashion dog accessories they can find for their chihuahuas and their yorkies and their Maltese pups, and if anyone is going to be famous in the land of chihuahuas and these other small breed dogs, it’s them.

But lately, I’ve been spotting a few chihuahua clothes fashion fanatics who could almost be said to be taking the whole fashionable dogs thing a little too far. Down here in the Puerto Vallarta area of Mexico where I’m living right now, it’s bloody hot, and it’s not usually the type of climate you’ll want to dress your chihuahua up in any sort of seriously heavy chihuahua clothing if you can help it. Where you’ll see a lot of people getting their chihuahua fashion dogs fix is indoors, in the heavily air conditioned rooms where their chihuahuas are down on the floor, in their little chihuahua dog beds, resting and inactive, and otherwise shivering and shaking to death without their little dog fashion outfits on their back. You don’t see a lot a chihuahuas wearing their chihuahua sweaters outside in the heat, and thank god!–except for lately, perhaps with the increasing popularity of the Beverly Hills Chihuahua scene in Puerto Vallarta, I’m seeing chihuahuas dressed up in layers of fashion forward chihuahuas clothing, and it’s crazy!

I’ve seen at least five different chihuahuas dressed up in three or more layers of chihuahua clothes in the past week alone, and while I am fully a fan of dog fashion, when you’re layering clothes over clothes with chihuahua accessories on your little dog like this in the heat, when it’s an oven outside right now, this August of 2011, that’s really pushing the boundaries of what’s considered humane treatment of an animal if you ask me! I know they mean well, but these little hairy chihuahua buggers have it rough in the heat like this without all that insulating fashion dogs clothing covering them up!

So please, if you’re going to make your chihuahua into a fashion dog with his little chihuahua clothes, do so responsibly! I know you, as someone who reads this chihuahua fashion blog, would not make this mistake, but if you see anyone who’s really pushing it with too much fashion dog accessories and clothing on their dogs this summer, ask them what on Earth they’re doing

It’s been freaking exciting around here lately in chihuahua land with the arrival of the new designer doggie clothes and chihuahua accessories like the new Wizard of Oz doggie collars for little dogs. I’ve been a chihuahua owner and a follower of the different dog fashions for a while now. At the Chihuahua Store, we stock designer chihuahua clothes of many different types, and while I thought I knew my chihuahua fashion trends, my friend from Paris puts me to shame in this department.

She grew up in France and spent part of her life living in London, living the dog fashion UK scene for a while, and having been to many of the European dog fashion show events in the early 2000s, she sure knows her chihuahua clothing!

Walking through her home is a little bit like walking through a chihuahua fashion wonderland, with little dogs of different breeds coming greet you in every room, in their cute little doggie fashions and their little bling chihuahua accessories. My Parisian friend has a particular focus with her small dogs and it’s to make them each into a high fashion dog that has his/her own unique character.

“The trick,” she says, “is to know your dog intimately. From there, it’s only a matter of finding the right fashion for the dog.” It sounds simple, but this girl lives and breathes fashion for chihuahuas and her other toy breed dogs, and she really knows how to make it look easy.

I’ve asked my friend if she’d ever consider organizing a dog fashion show to raise money for the local rescue group here in Sayulita, because she knows her pet fashion so well, and she said she would love to, so I’m super stoked about it! Not only am I going to be treated to a chihuahua dog fashion spectacle, some money will be raised to help the local chihuahua rescue and dog shelter her in the Riviera Nayarit. So fingers are crossed for that!
