Dog clothes are everywhere today, and whether you’re into chihuahua dog clothes or you’re more a cute dog clothes shopper, it’s these stylish dog clothes that dog owners are flocking to today. My neighbors, and all the pet owners of the little beach town I live in today is going gaga when they shop dog clothes online, and I’m lucky enough to get to see all this chihuahua clothing and these funky dog clothes on their little pets all the time!

Dog clothing does have its detractors, though, and while I think chihuahua clothing is totally fabu and that dressing up your dog in the most fashion-tastic designer dog clothes can be a lot of fun and a very good thing, not everyone feels the same. There are people who completely scoff at the very notion of dog fashion, and believe it to be cruel to dress a dog in an extra layer of fur.

Dog Clothes – Is There A Downside?

I think we have to respect their doggie clothes opinion, because not all of use have seen dog dresses and dog coats used in the same way. I know I have personally seen small dogs wearing heavy, thick dog clothes in the middle of the searing summer, when they’re out in the summer sun and the heat is bearing down on their and their small dog clothes, and that’s not at all cool in my books.

I think this goes without saying, but in terms of dog outfits, you have to use common sense with these little dog clothes, and dog clothing for all breeds of pet dogs. It’s a major emerging trend, having a chihuahua fashion dog walking beside you on a leash or tucked under your arm as you walk through the busy mall of a major cosmopolitan city, today, and it’s probably due in part to the ever-increasing popularity of the chihuahua clothes that owners of these little guys are flocking to in droves right now. These little fashion chihuahua doggies seem to be coming out of the woodwork where I live, and it’s almost freaking me out a bit!

Now, the Chihuahua Shop carries a lot of small dog fashion clothes for giving your chihuahua pup that injection of extra chihuahua style. Whereas some owners will be watching those fashion show dogs strutting their stuff in their chihuahua clothes down the runway on television, others will have their chihuahua dogs all spiffed up in chihuahua fashion dogs outfits there, right in front of them, with their little chi prancing around and ready to make it big in the Broadway spotlight with the right training. These are the people who take fashionable dogs seriously and buy all the fashion dog accessories they can find for their chihuahuas and their yorkies and their Maltese pups, and if anyone is going to be famous in the land of chihuahuas and these other small breed dogs, it’s them.

But lately, I’ve been spotting a few chihuahua clothes fashion fanatics who could almost be said to be taking the whole fashionable dogs thing a little too far. Down here in the Puerto Vallarta area of Mexico where I’m living right now, it’s bloody hot, and it’s not usually the type of climate you’ll want to dress your chihuahua up in any sort of seriously heavy chihuahua clothing if you can help it. Where you’ll see a lot of people getting their chihuahua fashion dogs fix is indoors, in the heavily air conditioned rooms where their chihuahuas are down on the floor, in their little chihuahua dog beds, resting and inactive, and otherwise shivering and shaking to death without their little dog fashion outfits on their back. You don’t see a lot a chihuahuas wearing their chihuahua sweaters outside in the heat, and thank god!–except for lately, perhaps with the increasing popularity of the Beverly Hills Chihuahua scene in Puerto Vallarta, I’m seeing chihuahuas dressed up in layers of fashion forward chihuahuas clothing, and it’s crazy!

I’ve seen at least five different chihuahuas dressed up in three or more layers of chihuahua clothes in the past week alone, and while I am fully a fan of dog fashion, when you’re layering clothes over clothes with chihuahua accessories on your little dog like this in the heat, when it’s an oven outside right now, this August of 2011, that’s really pushing the boundaries of what’s considered humane treatment of an animal if you ask me! I know they mean well, but these little hairy chihuahua buggers have it rough in the heat like this without all that insulating fashion dogs clothing covering them up!

So please, if you’re going to make your chihuahua into a fashion dog with his little chihuahua clothes, do so responsibly! I know you, as someone who reads this chihuahua fashion blog, would not make this mistake, but if you see anyone who’s really pushing it with too much fashion dog accessories and clothing on their dogs this summer, ask them what on Earth they’re doing

In my travels as a chihuahua clothes enthusiast, I’ve come across many dog boutiques that sell small dog clothing that ranges from the designer pet fashion that costs thousands of dollars per outfit, to the bargain basement-type cheap chihuahua clothing shops that typically try to sell thinly woven, poorly made clothing for chihuahuas and yorkies and other small breeds that fall apart within a few weeks, in my experience.

At the Chihuahua Shop, I’ve worked to find a balance between these two types of small dogie boutique stores, and sell dog accessories that mimic the quality of the thousand-dollar outfits while costing a fraction of what they can run for. Now, I know that “reasonable” is in the eye of the beholder and is largely determined by the size of said person’s bank account. It’s always fun when new dog cloths come in to the Chihuahua Clothes Shop and I get to offer a new line of small dog clothes to chihuahua owners and people with other breeds of small dogs! This week has been a blast for me because with the arrival of the new customizable dog T-shirts, anyone can make their own personalized dog clothing for their precious little dog and have some fun thinking about what message they want their dog to walk around with!

I’ve had a few people emailing in, telling me they love their doggie’s new chihuahua clothes for dogs with their personalized message on it. They send me the photos and it’s always so cool to see happy customers!

Over here on the beach in Mexico, I get to see a number of small dogs wearing doggie cloths out surfing almost every day. Surfers take their little dogs with them out on the board, paddling out to the waves, and then they ride in on the waves with their little dog on top of the surf board! It’s awesome:

A lot of these beach dogs who spend a lot of time in the water wear white doggie clothing, with their owner wanting to protect their pet’s skin from the intense UV rays from the sun. It’s a smart move because a lot of small dogs like chihuahuas have these hairless parts of their bodies, like around their ears, nose, and their little tummies, where the sun can really blast away and burn them if you aren’t careful. So just covering your little dog up with a little dog fashion can be very practical in the summer sun, it you’re talking about dog clothing that’s light and breathes well.

Normally, pet outfits are the subject of jokes among non-dog owners who don’t get it and know what it’s about. But when it comes to my dogs’ health, I really don’t have any problem dressing up my chihuahua pups in doggy cloths, and even my little foster poodles in chihuahua outfits. When it comes to their health, I don’t care what anybody thinks: I’m going to take care of my dogs.

But obviously most people do care about how their dogs look when dressed in their tiny pet cloths, and so I definitely do make an effort to bring only the best small dog clothes to the Chihuahua Store. Small dog apparel: it lets you dress up your dog in cute designer dog clothes, it’s fun, it helps your chihuahua stay warm on cool nights by wrapping her in a layer of chihuahua clothes, and it makes stalkers out of perfect strangers at the grocery store.

Let me explain.

As a pet fashion enthusiast, I collect a lot of pet apparel for my little chihuahuas. Sometimes it’s a cute dog fashion coat from the Chihuahua Shop here; other times, it’s something from the luxury dog clothes for small dogs line of another online boutique. But either way, when my chihuahuas leave the house, they are well dressed!!

Well when I leave the house with my dogs, they’re usually dressed up in some of their best dog clothing. And, as it happens, when I go grocery shopping, I like to sneak my chihuahua Namaste into the store with me, to do a little spontaneous and covert K-9 grocery shopping! I usually slip her into my backpack after we step out of the car and we’re walking through the parking lot to get to the store, walk in, and then place her in that little top shelf of the buggy cart, on top of the backpack and using it as a pillow while I wheel her around and do my thing, usually without any store employees noticing (important).

So yesterday, we’re walking through the parking lot, she has her adorable chihuahua clothes on, and as I pick her up to put her in the backpack so I can sneak her in past through the door guard person here at the local “Mega” here in Puerto Vallarta, down here in Mexico, this rather large woman in pink sweat pants and a huge leopard-print visor comes charging from around this parked minivan and starts gushing about how cute Namaste is and how she has small dogs of her own, and how she loves to dress them up in yorkie clothes, and this and that and the entire kitchen sink of a conversation! I couldn’t get a word in as she walked beside me and I stuck Namaste into my backpack.

“Are you going to sneak her in?!” she announced to the entire neighborhood in her screechy voice. “I hope so,” I smiled back, now nearing the door and about to walk through. She had this look of excitement like she was going to explode or something: what is it about the mixture of chihuahuas and pet clothes that makes people loose it like this? I could see if she had never seen puppy clothes on a little dog before, but this is a person who lives with yorkies, who dresses them up in their dog coats and dog sweaters frequently, I presume. So what’s the deal with her squeal? Lol, I have to have fun with it: I’m only joking because this woman was super over the top with her adoration for Namaste and the small dog apparel she was wearing.

Anyways, I get into the store and I’m shopping around, the woman has left do to her shopping, and the usual mixture of kids and assorted other shoppers are noticing and coming up to pet the fashionable and increasingly famous chihuahua, Namaste. I’m walking through the pet supplies isle, looking to see what they have in the way of small dog collars and if they have any pet couture collars like the last grocery store I visited did (I couldn’t believe it!), when the woman sees me again and start billowing out about how cute she looks atop my grocery cart. This is not good. Now everybody is looking and staring, including the store staff.

I quicken my pace and give this jovial woman another quick smile and a knod, trying to break away, but she seems to keep following me around the store from isle to isle! She goes on and on, talking about the beds for smaller dogs and the pet furniture she found at the dog store the other day, and how she likes to use small dog harnesses on her yorkies instead of a leash. She starts talking about her shopper’s appetite for petite dog clothes–something I can relate to–so I stop my shopping for a minute to talk with her about chihuahua clothes and the Chihuahua Shop I run here, and as it turns out, she’s actually a cool person who takes good care of her dogs.

Unfortunately, it’s at this point when I spot the grocery store floor manager over the shoulder of my new, round, pink, small dog fashion enthusiast friend, and he’s walking toward us, and he doesn’t look very happy. It turns out that bringing your little dog into the store, even when she stays inside the little seat in the push cart and no matter how cute she looks in clothes for little dogs, is in violation of store policy, and I would have to take her out. And so I did …after a series of zig-zags through a few isles and a quick stop through the checkout line

Perhaps that’s one of the better parts of shopping for small dog apparel online: you don’t have to deal with “store policy” like this and you can have your chihuahua right there with you, browsing through the small dog clothing to your heart’s content. I used to think small dog coats were a joke. I would scoff at the notion of a dog (which already has a coat of hair, does he not?) wearing human-invented fashion. Then, in an unusual twist of fate, and ended up taking care of two chihuahuas that I eventually came to call my own. I scoff no more. In fact, it was a matter of mere weeks after first getting them that I ordered my first small dog clothes from a chihuahua clothes boutique!

So what the heck changed my mind so quickly? It was the two chihuahuas: they would start to shiver and seek out the warmest spot in the room whenever they’d been in a room for a while and hadn’t just been prancing around down the sidewalks on a walk with me! As much as I thought that clothes for small dogs were an absolute joke, I couldn’t deny that my two little dogs were not exactly comfortable after they’d been indoors for a while and were just lounging around (which is the official chihuahua sport, by the way!) So I conceded: I bought a pair of chihuahua coats from the little dog coat boutique. And I haven’t looked back since!

When talking with other chihuahua owners today, we chat about the entire gamut of dog clothes, from the doggy parkas and chihuahua ski jackets you see at the Chihuahua Shop, to the other winter dog coats for small dogs the warm dog coats and sweaters you find on the shelves at the local Petco and other brick and mortar pet stores in town. It’s a little freaky when you get talking with your neighbor about her prize-winning chihuahua and how they own matching sets of clothing–both her and her dog!–and how they never leave the house without first coordinating their outfits. For me, I haven’t quite reach that point with my small dogs yet, but I know there are some aspiring Paris Hilton-types out there who could probably put me and my little chiwawa to shame when it comes to dressing to kill for the chihuahua fashion spotlight!

This summer, it’s been a blast to see all the new summer dog coats coming into the store, here. I’ve been getting a lot of questions about waterproof dog coats for chihuahuas, as apparently there are a lot of owners who love to walk and dance and play in the rain with their small dogs, who obviously want to keep their little pets warm and snuggly while doing so! So just for those of you looking for such a small dog coat, we’ve brought in the chihuahua raincoat in a variety of colors, so you can get your four-pawed puddle splashing party going on, and semi-convince everyone else on the street that you’ve lost it, haha!–don’t worry, it’s one of my favorite things to do!

Apart from the heavier and rain-repellent small dog coats, there are the more funky and fashionable coats for smaller dogs that you’ll find in most chihuahua clothing stores, as well. If you’re going for the whole K-9 fahionista poochy-Gaga look for your dog, you’ll need your pink dog coats and your crazy wasp-coat for your little dog, and those other cray dog fashion coats that grab your attention like a fashionable attention magnet. These dogtacular clothes are all over the place online, and I do my best to stock the creme de la creme of them in the Chihuahua Clothes Shop.

The one other option you have if you want small dogs coats for your chihuahuas is to make your own. Now, I’m all for do-it-yourself projects when it comes to your chihuahuas, but I’m really not the sewing type, and so I’ll leave it to the budding chihuahua fashion artists at YouTube to guide you, if this option strikes an inner fashion cord with you.
