Some of these new chihuahua coats are thicker and are for cold weather in the winter months. Some of the other jackets for chihuahuas are a bit lighter and have fleece lining and are for cool weather. And the shop also brought in some new fleece-lined chihuahua raincoats that keep your pets warm and dry when the weather is crap outside but you still want to walk your little doggies!

Oh hi there!–it’s Namaste the chihuahua again! Mikey has gone out to buy groceries and it’s my chance do another guest sneak-post here on the chihuahua clothes shop’s blog! I managed to dig through some of the new dog clothing inventory at the store and I managed to drag out some super cool dog coats for small dogs, and I’m going to try and write what I think about them here (if my paws let me…)

I have to say that perhaps my favorite outfit is my snugly warm dog coat my owner got me last year! As a little dog, I get cold down here on the ground, and when I’m not on my walk, and I spend a little time lounging around inside on a hot day in the cooled room, I start to shiver and freeze down here! It gets really cold when you’re all the way down here AND you’re a breed that has a super high metabolism and you shed your body heat quickly.

So any small dog coats that keep me a little warmer, I love! I’m super in love with my dog fleeces and, at night, really like to wear them over top my dog pyjamas. It keeps me nice and comfortable!

Another one of my favorite chihuahua outfits is my high visibility dog coat, for when I’m out walking around at night. I’m not really sure what it’s like up there when you’re walking along the side of the street as a human, but when you’re all of ten inches tall and a loud car goes by a little too close, it’s freaking scary. So I’m definitely a fan of the little dog suits and fleece coats for small dogs that have those fluorescent strips on them so your cars can see me and not run me over! Oh, it freaks me out every time someone zooms by in a loud, noisy automobile! I don’t like it!

Those are some of my favorites in the little dog coats arena, but I’ve seen so many more styles in the new Chihuahua Store here. There’s these fashion dog coats that have fur lining (fake fur, of course!), these crazy cool quilted parkas with hoods, chihuahua vests with fur collars, and even these little luxury ski parkas for dogs, for when you really want to treat one of us to a life of comfort and warmth in the cold!

Well I have to go and get all these small dog coats for small dogs back in the store before Mikey comes home and sees me, finds out I can type and write about chihuahua clothing, and then puts me to work here full time in the chihuahua shop!! I can’t have anything taking away from my precious lounging time by the pool or my snuggle time with him by his feet while he works on his laptop. Fast forward to today, when I’ve now owned chihuahuas for a number of years and have some experience taking care of these little cutie pies. I’ve always been one to pamper my pooches and I love buying chihuahua clothes for my dogs, but a little while ago, I got super fed up with the deceptive marketing of the different dog clothing stores out there that are selling clothes for chihuahuas, and I finally decided to do something about it.

I got tired of looking at the pictures in the online dog clothing boutiques, getting excited, buying the dog clothes I wanted, and then having them show up late, and the chihuahua clothes being entirely something other than what I expected them to be, and the shirts and sweaters and a lot of the advertised pet costumes being far lower quality than what was advertised. In short, I got tired of being disappointed with small dog vendors online. So I decided to start my own chihuahua store and focus in on just clothing for chihuahuas and similarly small breeds and create a store that sells the kind of small dog clothing that I would want to buy. And I wanted there to be a store selling these clothes that actually has good customer service, that gets back to you promptly when you have a question and that delivers their clothes to you–the customer–on time, every time, and puts you first. Is that too much to ask for these days?! I don’t think it is, and so that’s really why I started my online chihuahua clothes shop.

Now, is the chihuahua shop for everyone? No, it isn’t. Some people like different kinds of clothing for their dogs, like the ultra luxury (and insanely priced) clothing for their little dogs that cost up into the thousands of dollars range, and that’s really not the focus of my store. Personally, I’m into chihuahua outfits that fit well, that are made from high quality materials, and that actually look like the pictures on store’s site, and that don’t leave you broke and selling your clothes off your own back just so you can clothe your little chi (wouldn’t that be a sweet story, though )

At my chihuahua store, I try to not just include the standard variety of dog sweaters and shirts and coats that you’ll find in most chihuahua boutiques, but also some very high quality chihuahua accessories like gorgeous Swarovski crystal-studded dog necklaces and other similarly fine dog jewelry. I’m very much into dog bling, so I do my best to find the latest and greatest brand of customizable puppy collars (pictured left) that you can order with your own little dog’s name on in rhinestones and jewels, in your color of choice, so you can beautify and pamper your chiwawa in the luxurious lifestyle she deserves! It’s actually kind of insane how many quality small dog products and how much quality small dog apparel is at the Chihuahua Shop right now. I’m working tirelessly to find the best chihuahua accessories on the market right now, like the latest in dog fashionista dog carriers, for example. And I only say it’s insane because of how much stuff for long hair and apple head and deer head chihuahuas (and really: all the other small breeds that are super small like these guys) that I see in the store right now: I’m only interested in stocking super high quality stuff and if it isn’t good, I’m not putting it out there, the way that some chihuahua stores do. It’s wild how much quality effort has been put into make these little dogs cute and adorable and comfortable. These little chihuahuas have got it made–I’m telling you!

Puppy coats help keep little dogs warm at night and when living in cooler places. As owners, we get these little coats for our little puppies to make them more comfortable and warm, and sometimes to give them a bit of doggie fashion flair. These little coats for dogs counteract the tendency that chihuahuas and other little dogs have to cool off quickly when not being active and moving around.

Now, not every puppy coat is made the same: some are definitely more cool and funky and fashionable than others, and some are made to higher quality standards than others. God knows how many different little coats for puppies I’ve tried out that have basically fallen apart with just a couple of weeks of wear. But the upside is that this has allowed me the opportunity to test out quite a few different brands of puppy coats and find some really adorable ones that remain a staple in my chihuahuas’ clothes selection to this day.

Of all the places I’ve bought little coats for puppies, I’ve find the Chihuahua Shop to be the best. They seem to only carry the higher quality brands that won’t fall apart after just a couple weeks of wear.

If you live in a place where a lot of people own smaller dogs, you’re surely seeing a lot of dog coats and jackets these days on those small dogs. I take my dogs for a quite a few walks throughout the week, and on cooler days, I pass by a lot of owners with chihuahuas and other little dogs wearing puppy coats. The purpose of these coats for dogs is of course to keep your little dog warm in cooler climates, as smaller dogs tend to cool down easier and shiver more than bigger dogs. If you have a chihuahua for example, it helps to dress her up in clothes for chihuahuas, to compensate for her body’s tendency to shed heat a lot faster than other dogs.

I used to think this whole dog clothing thing was ridiculous, but I’ve changed my mind about this ever since I first became joint-owner of my friend’s chihuahua, and now I’m an advocate of chihuahua clothes because I see how much more comfortable they make my little dogs, allowing my little snuggle bugs to actually enjoy their walks when it’s cold out, instead being stuck in an uncomfortable, non-stop shiver-fest!

Living in Canada last year with my chihuahuas, I bought and tested out quite a few different clothes for my little dogs in the span of about six months. I had doggy snowsuits, puppy sweaters, and the entire warm end of the dog fashion industry that I was dressing up my little dogs with. One of the most useful chihuahua clothes I came across for my little female chi was this dog waterproof coat that would keep her dry whenever it was either raining or snowing. Canada is a cold place, and you can’t really afford to get wet when you’re outside and it’s freezing out! So when it was snowing, this little dog raincoat would keep the flakes off my chihuahua’s back and prevent them from melting on her and getting her wet; and in the spring and fall it would keep the rain off her back and keep her dry and warm on rainy days. This was one of the most useful dog coats and jackets I’ve ever had for my little Namaste, and I had her wear it almost every day when the weather was lousy because it literally took her from a place of not really wanting to go out and walk when it was raining to almost feverishly jumping up on my lap whenever she’d sense that it was walk time–even when it was raining! This little doggy rain coat made a huge change in my chihuahua over the few months I had her wear it.

And of course in the winter, you have the little dog snowsuit to provide that extra warmth your little dog needs in the frigid cold. The snowsuits for dogs help combat the brutally cold weather you face in places with harsh winters, and if you couple them with four little dog boots for your pooch, your little dogs can actually enjoy walking in the winter time–something that is virtually impossible without the aid of these doggy coats and jackets if you’re living in a cooler climate. If you’re like me and you live in a cold place like Canada, then I really recommend you pick up a few dog jackets for winter weather if you have little dogs.

I’ll be honest: if someone had recommended I buy my dog a pair of pyjamas a couple of years ago, I would have thought they were on crack. Even today in the pet stores: “why on earth would my dog need a pair of dog pyjamas?!” many pet owners continue to exclaim when they first see them on the shelves in the dog clothing isle.

My bewilderment came down to the thing I had in common with these in the pet stores today: I had never looked after, owned, fostered, or HAD a chihuahua, or any small short hair dog for that matter!

Once you finally spend a bit of time with one of these little guys in your life, you quickly discover that they spend an inordinate amount of time shaking and shivering! And it gets a little hard to watch after a while; “that can’t be comfortable,” you think.

And it’s the worst for these little dogs at night, because it cools down even further and the dogs are often snoozing close to or actually on the floor–where all the coldest air resides–and so they curl themselves into a little ball and just try to huddle up and keep as warm as they can while also shivering their little buts off, often.

And that’s where these dog pyjamas come in: they keep your dog a lot more more at night so this doesn’t happen, basically. They also happen to make your dog look ridiculously cute

I was first introduced to dog pajamas years ago: my friend had bought a pair of them for her little yorkie, and I’ll admit it: I laughed when I saw them. I just couldn’t see the reason for buying pyjamas for your dog–“they have a coat of hair after all, don’t they? They don’t wear little pairs of puppy pajamas in the wild!” So I gave my friend a hard time for dressing her little doggy in these flannel dog pants and the little dog night shirt. The whole idea of it seemed funny to me, even if that little dog did look insanely cute in those pyjamas….

The thing was, though, that up until that point, I had only ever owned and fostered bigger breeds of dogs: labradors, pit bulls, boxers, and a cocker spaniel. I had never had a need to dress any of my dogs up in doggie sweaters or any of those K-9 coats or anything like that. My dogs were just always seemed to be warm enough without any additional help from clothing during the day or at night from little pyjamas for dogs!

Fast forward a few years: I get into a relationship, and my new girlfriend has a chihuahua and a yorkie of her own, and they both shiver at night–especially the chihuahua.  I had never lived with little dogs before so I had never seen this, but now it made sense to me!  These little dogs actually do benefit from wearing their cute puppy pyjamas while they sleep.  Otherwise, they jump up on the bed and try to burrow under the covers and snuggle as close as possible with me just to stay warm!  So it wasn’t long after meeting my girlfriend that I was introduced full-time to the vast world of chihuahua clothes and all these different little coats and outfits for dogs!

There were sweaters and coats, costumes, and yes: even little dog pyjamas that they wore at night.  I still find it a little funny, but now my little snuggle bugs come running over to me whenever I pick up a pair of clothes for chihuahuas in my house, practically begging for me to put them on them to make them more comfortable!  They love these little dog jumpers and puppy sweaters… all of it!  They look so cute all dressed up in their fashionable night pajamas for dogs!

Chihuahuas tend to cool off and get cold more easily than other breeds of dogs. They originate from a warm part of the planet–whether it was really in Mexico as many believe or in the Mediterranean as some experts suggest–and so genetically speaking, they’re more geared for the heat than a lot of other breeds. In addition, their smaller bodies have a higher metabolism, which makes them cool down quicker than bigger dogs with lower metabolic rates. So if you live in a place like Canada or the UK or a state in the US where it really cools down at some point in the day or for part of the year, then you can just pick up a pieces of clothing for your little dog and play chihuahua dress up with him, and that’s all you really need to do.

I’ve lived with a number of chihuahuas in Canada that I brought up from Mexico, and they do find it cold without the clothes, but you put a sweater on them and then dress them up in a chihuahua coat that is specifically made for dogs, and they stay warm just like any other kind of dog would. It’s really not a problem, and they’re perfectly fine when they have their clothes. Even without the clothes, they do alright, but you want make sure they’re comfortable in your home and when they go out for a walk when they’re cold, so that’s what the doggy clothes are for. It’s pretty simple.

Every chihuahua dog owner I’ve ever seen who lives in a cooler climate has a little collection of clothes for their little K-9… it’s kind of cute, actually. The more you walk around the neighborhood in the winter, the more you get to see your neighbors’ dog clothes wardrobes, haha, with all the chihuahua winter coats and the shirts and sweaters, and tons of different coats for dogs. So yes, it is normal for people to have chihuahuas in colder weather and in cold climates, and live with Chihuahuas in Canada in the winter, and in other cold places too, of course. To take them outside, just pick up a few chihuahua clothes for the little pooches, and they’re good to go.

Compared to other breeds of dogs, chihuahuas are a relatively easy breed to take care of.  Their small size makes them much easier to manage, since they can’t destroy your house nearly as much as larger breed dogs if they’re unbalanced and have issues–and a lot of them do.  Many owners treat their chihuahuas like their little babies, which only messes up these poor little dogs, but I digress…  Yes, it is definitely a lot easier to take care of a little chihuahua than a larger breed dog.  The smaller size just makes them much lower maintenance because they have a lower level of need.

I notice, especially with chihuahua dogs, that a lot of people tend to purchase or pick up or adopt their tiny pet when they’re in a highly emotional moment in their life, and so they tend to select a dog that makes them feel something.  And when people look at a chihuahua, many can’t help but have that “OOOOOHHHHhhh, how cute!!!” reaction to it, and they immediately have to go over and touch it and talk to it in the high pitched, squeaky voice, and make a big scene.  So a lot of chihuahuas are brought into homes primarily because of how they look and how they make people feel when they look at these dogs.  This is probably why chihuahua clothes are so popular with owners: even with chihuahua puppies of just a few weeks, owners often doll up their newly born cuddly “chiwawa”–yes, many name their dogs after the breed itself, in this skewed way (I know: it’s a little freaky… but cute at the same time)–in costumes and take their older cute and cuddly little chiwawa dog for a spin around the park and to socialize with all the other little dogs and meet and greet the owners… it can be quite a scene, to say the least!  Especially when the owners start talking like that: “my chiwawa dog is so smart, how about your chiwawa??” hahaha.  I love it.

But no matter what your opinion on small breed dogs, you have to admit that chihuahuas are, in one way or another, kinda cute… at least the starlet-fashionistas think so in Hollywood–Paris and Tinkerbell, anyone!?  They are by far the most famous celebrity-chihuahua pairing.  Or should I say chiwawa celebrity pairing?–haha!

And of course, a lot of people find that they have to dress their teacup chihuahua–and even long hair chihuahuas–up in clothes for dogs to keep them warm, and so the clothes serve do serve a more practical function.  But these dog clothes take on another dimension when it comes to chihuahuas and other little dogs: this kind of fashion freakshow effect that seems to take over when owners go shopping for chihuahua clothes!  A lot of chihuahua owners will love buying costumes and little shirts and sweaters and coats for dogs that dress their little poochy up in a way where he looks adorable and fashion forward, in addition to providing him with some additional warmth.  And sometimes these costumes get a little out of hand and silly and.. ok, bonkers, but that’s half the fun–right?–walking down the street and seeing your neighbor with her fashion freakshow chihuahua, haha!  It makes my day every time!  This isn’t strictly with smaller breed dogs, but it’s definitely more common with them:

So what the hell is a dog backpack? Well it’s just that: it’s a little backpack your pooch carries on his back to intensify the walk and make it more of a workout for him.

I do a lot of training work with dogs and their owners, and when it comes to the clothes owners buy for their dogs, I see two main kinds of customers: people looking to dress up their dog all cute and cuddly and make him adorable, and people who find their dog is a little too cold and want to find a sweater or a coat for their dog to keep him warm.

Costumes, sweaters, and coats for dogs accomplish accommodate those two types of cases quite well, but combining them with a dog backpack takes each of those one step further. For starters, they look so ridiculously cute on your dog that even if you’re walking by the neighborhood Grinch, you’re bound to get a high pitched, squeaky voice “OoOOooh! How cute!!” out of the person. But second of all, it keeps your little teacup chihuahua or your big german shepherd warmer by making the walk a more intense workout for him. And by making the walk more of a workout, your dog heats up faster from the more intense exercise, and so it actually helps keep your pooch warm from the inside out, in addition to him wearing a shirt or dog sweater underneath. If you live in a super cold place in the winter, this really helps; I’m from Canada and it is bloody freezing up there in the winter, and even with a sweater and shirt on, my dogs still shiver. But I add a dog backpack onto each of them, in addition to their clothes for dogs, and the shivering stops and they do great on the walk.

You can put whatever you want in the backpack. Personally, I fill my dogs’ backpacks with bottles of water or bean bags, depending the dog I have. I do a lot of fostering for different rescued dogs, so I adjust the weight for the particular dog I’m working with. With the pitbull mix I currently have, I load him up with 2 litres of water in his backpack, which intensifies the walk for him and makes a half hour walk seem more like a one hour walk for him, which is great because he’s got a lot of energy and needs a ton of exercise to stay balanced. For my chihuahua, though, I just put a beanbag in each side of the backpack and make her carry those on the walk, much less weight for her far smaller size, so I don’t strain here smaller muscles too much. The backpacks work great on our early morning walks, when it’s cold out and the dogs are cold and they’re also ready to tear a hole in the side of the planet with all their energy after just waking up!

So I highly recommend using a dog backpack if you live in a colder climate and want to help keep your k-9 companion a little bit warmer on the cool days of this brutal winter, or if you have a higher level energy dog who requires a lot of exercise each day. Along with your pooch’s other clothes for dogs, I’m sure he’d welcome a little backpack into his K-9 wardrobe, haha! So surprise him with a little backpack on his next birthday. These clothes are often thought of as unnecessary by many dog owners, but when you have a smaller breed dog like a teacup chihuahua, little clothes like these keep the dog warm and safe from coming down with a cold when living in cooler countries. I’m from Canada personally and, when living there with my little pets, my chihuahua dogs make daily use of their tiny chihuahua clothes because it’s freezing in the winter time and they come from from a much hotter part of the planet.
