Talking with my neighbors and some of my dog lover friends, it seems a lot of dog people first thing of designer clothes for small dogs when first thinking about small dog clothing. When you live around dog lovers who probably have more clothes for small dogs than they do for themselves, you get into some interesting conversations about chihuahua clothes and other costumes and clothes for little dogs. Sometimes we simply discuss the new additions to the Chihuahua Shop, and other times it’s more a conversation about what our smaller dogs would dress us in if the tables were turned!–which, by the way, I really don’t care to think about too hard, haha.

Small dog clothing is everywhere in the dog world today, and it’s likely because these small dog outfits are so darn cute. The outfits for small dogs that people crave to dress their little dogs up in are the ones that stand out, catch your eye, and either shock you outright or make you explode with uncontrollable laughter for minutes on end. And for the sake of our chihuahuas and or little toy dogs of every breed, I think this is pretty cool because it means they are going to be getting more attention and affection from their owners!

Pug clothes have got to be the truest sign that the universe has both a sense of humor and an adorable sense of fashion. That’s probably why we added some of the best pug clothing I’ve seen anywhere to the store, along with the fact that these clothes for small dogs are among my absolute favorite pet fashion outfits of all time! As someone who works in the pet fashion industry, I’ve seen a log of cool, funky accessories for dogs and chihuahua clothes that can make any teacup chihuahua look so cute it could kill you, but clothes for pugs usually take it even further because they’re combining with those fantastic wrinkles, and render your little dog an adorable rump of wrinkled fashion dog fun! Haha!

A have a friend who is literally obsessed with clothes for pugs. She has four pugs she calls her own, and she’s given them each a style of their own. Each pug dog has its own wardrobe with specific clothes he or she wears, and, according to my friend, they each have their own preferences as to which do clothes they like to wear. I almost died laughing the first time my friend related this news to me, but then I stepped into her apartment for the first time and I simply couldn’t laugh: I was too blown away by the portal I had just walked through when I entered through the door and into this world of PUG. It was overwhelming.

Two of the little wrinkled beasts were wearing designer pug dog jumpers, looking ready to run a marathon at any instant! Another one was wearing is pug fashion outfit that looked like pug clothing from the Lady Gaga line or something outlandish and otherworldly: it had these crystal pieces jetting off of the back and shoulders of the dog, making it look like Gaga’s “Poker Face” costume, only adapted into a little pug pet fashion!

And the last pug had on this funky neon pink dog vest underneath two layers of pug coats. I asked my friend why on earth her pug was wearing so many layers when it’s well known that pugs can overheat so easily. Apparently, this guy loves to hang out with his owner in the air conditioned bedroom in her apartment, but he freezes and starts shivering without the clothes. Hence the pug with the nearly onion-layered pet apparel!

I’m really not sure how I collected so many friends that are all into small dog clothes to this degree. Believe me: there are many, and it almost freaks me out when I think about it… how exactly did this happen?? It must be that secret thing and “the law of attraction,” lol.

The woman in the video is mostly right, I believe. As owners, we do often buy our dogs their clothing to keep them warm, but if we’re honest, we also buy these little pomeranian clothes and poodle clothes, or terrier clothes or clothes whatever breed of little dog you have, because we want to lavish them with adorable fashion and let them live the high life that we ourselves like to live. I mean, really: what could be more fun than dressing your little dog in french bulldog clothes? What could be more adorable and fashionable than dressing your chihuahua in cute little costumes and the famous chihuahua clothes from movies like Beverly Hills Chihuahua or Legally Blonde? Little pug clothing and chihuahua clothes help us give our smaller dogs the live of luxury that we imagine for them. These small dog outfits allow us to be limited only by our imagination when it comes to the life we give our little dogs and the world we share with them.

These outfits and clothes for small dogs allow us to transport ourselves and our little dogs to the land of fantasy, and live a life that, frankly, is more interesting than the normal, everyday world of bore and routine that everyone participates in. There’s nothing wrong with being an ordinary person living an ordinary life, but it’s much more fun to step outside of that and go have some fun with your imagination and bring your friends with you and create your own world, your own life, and write your own story along the road of your life as a person, as a dog owner, and in every sense. I used to think small dog coats were a joke. I would scoff at the notion of a dog (which already has a coat of hair, does he not?) wearing human-invented fashion. Then, in an unusual twist of fate, and ended up taking care of two chihuahuas that I eventually came to call my own. I scoff no more. In fact, it was a matter of mere weeks after first getting them that I ordered my first small dog clothes from a chihuahua clothes boutique!

So what the heck changed my mind so quickly? It was the two chihuahuas: they would start to shiver and seek out the warmest spot in the room whenever they’d been in a room for a while and hadn’t just been prancing around down the sidewalks on a walk with me! As much as I thought that clothes for small dogs were an absolute joke, I couldn’t deny that my two little dogs were not exactly comfortable after they’d been indoors for a while and were just lounging around (which is the official chihuahua sport, by the way!) So I conceded: I bought a pair of chihuahua coats from the little dog coat boutique. And I haven’t looked back since!

When talking with other chihuahua owners today, we chat about the entire gamut of dog clothes, from the doggy parkas and chihuahua ski jackets you see at the Chihuahua Shop, to the other winter dog coats for small dogs the warm dog coats and sweaters you find on the shelves at the local Petco and other brick and mortar pet stores in town. It’s a little freaky when you get talking with your neighbor about her prize-winning chihuahua and how they own matching sets of clothing–both her and her dog!–and how they never leave the house without first coordinating their outfits. For me, I haven’t quite reach that point with my small dogs yet, but I know there are some aspiring Paris Hilton-types out there who could probably put me and my little chiwawa to shame when it comes to dressing to kill for the chihuahua fashion spotlight!

This summer, it’s been a blast to see all the new summer dog coats coming into the store, here. I’ve been getting a lot of questions about waterproof dog coats for chihuahuas, as apparently there are a lot of owners who love to walk and dance and play in the rain with their small dogs, who obviously want to keep their little pets warm and snuggly while doing so! So just for those of you looking for such a small dog coat, we’ve brought in the chihuahua raincoat in a variety of colors, so you can get your four-pawed puddle splashing party going on, and semi-convince everyone else on the street that you’ve lost it, haha!–don’t worry, it’s one of my favorite things to do!

Apart from the heavier and rain-repellent small dog coats, there are the more funky and fashionable coats for smaller dogs that you’ll find in most chihuahua clothing stores, as well. If you’re going for the whole K-9 fahionista poochy-Gaga look for your dog, you’ll need your pink dog coats and your crazy wasp-coat for your little dog, and those other cray dog fashion coats that grab your attention like a fashionable attention magnet. These dogtacular clothes are all over the place online, and I do my best to stock the creme de la creme of them in the Chihuahua Clothes Shop.

The one other option you have if you want small dogs coats for your chihuahuas is to make your own. Now, I’m all for do-it-yourself projects when it comes to your chihuahuas, but I’m really not the sewing type, and so I’ll leave it to the budding chihuahua fashion artists at YouTube to guide you, if this option strikes an inner fashion cord with you.
