I had a surreal experience this weekend: I got to see the Mecca of puppy accessories for chihuahuas and other little breed puppies. My chihuahua clothes fanatic friend took me for a weekend getaway, and her little chihuahua puppy tagged along in her chihuahua accessories (she wore a puppy collar charm and two hair bows from the Chihuahua Store!) My friend wouldn’t even tell me where we were headed, just that I had to see it and that there were going to be a lot of little dogs dressed up in puppy accessories like I would not believe.

And my god, was she ever right! Now, I live in a rather competitive chihuahua puppy clothes environment where owners are constantly trying to outdo each other with the chihuahua collars and the puppy accessories they dress up their little dogs with, but this little town my friend took me to on the other side of the bay… holy luxury dog clothes mole! First, we drove around to the one beach-side village that was the end of the line and you couldn’t drive any further, and so we had to grab our little dogs, wearing their cute dog collars and pet accessories for dogs as per my friends instructions that we had to look the part, and we hopped into a water taxi that took us about another 25 minutes around the rain forest bay to the town at the southern mouth of the bay. And stepping off the boat and onto the pier, I was amazed: I had left planet earth and entered the realm of chiwawa puppies and puppy accessories!

There were SO many little chihuahuas wearing small dog accessories I almost couldn’t count. Apparently, all the little dog-loving owners come out to this town on certain weekends to gather and hold this puppy boutique fiesta, complete with silent auctions on the latest puppy clothes and puppy accessories for their tiny chihuahuas and their yorkies and their other little doggies.

I asked some of them why they held their parties there, at this part of the bay, and they told me that because it is because the place is both so extremely beautiful and because it is remote they can be alone with their little dogs in their puppy fashion insanity without having to worry about feeling strange about having their little dogs wearing puppy accessories to the extent they had dressed up their little puppies with: to complete puppy diva-dom!

I had to agree: this tiny beach town was gorgeous: it starts on this wide stretch of beach and climbs up, into the mountain side and then descends back down the other, back down to the beach: it’s a picturesque little beach hideaway for these puppy fashion fanatics! And there were more chihuahua pups wearing puppy collars and designer puppy accessories that you could shake a stick at. Even the restaurants along the beach had these little puppy beds out in the sand, for the homeless beach puppy dogs to come in a rest when they wanted a respite from the hot sun. It was awesome.

Saying Goodbye to The Land of Puppy Accessories

I was a little sad, leaving this town of Yelapa, but all things come to an end, and I had to step back into the real world. There’s only so long when you’re surrounded by all of these little chihuahua puppy fashion divas before you start to get weirded out and feeling like they are the society and you are their pet! Like I said: this puppy world with all the puppy accessories was like something out of a bizarre fairy tale!

I picked up this beautiful puppy harness from one of the women there, selling puppy accessories, and I’m going to see if we can bring it in to the Chihuahua Shop because it’s gorgeous with these emerald green crystals that sparkle in the sun like I have never seen! Over the past few years, I’ve worn a lot of chihuahua clothes, and my owner usually does a great job and buys just the right dog sweater for me from the pet boutique, and it fits like an oh-so-comfortable glove! On the rare occasion, he’ll miss the mark a bit and pick out a small dog costume for me that just isn’t up to my princess standard, but I know he means well and I do my best to wear all of the clothes he buys for me and the other chihuahua puppies in this house with pride!

What my owner doesn’t know is that me and the other little doggies in this house like to surf around online when he’s gone, on the dog clothing stores, checking out what’s out there in the pet stores today, and recently we’ve been spending a lot of time cruising through the chihuahua outfits shop. It sure does have a lot of variety in the types of fashion available for us little dogs, and we sure do like the designs!!

We actually had a vote amongst our furry selves this morning and voted on our favorite chihuahua outfit we can find online right now, and over half of us chose an article of clothing from that chihuahua shop! Michelle has worked very hard on setting it up, talking about “C-Name redirects” and all this other computer mumbo jumbo that is WAY over our little furry heads! We may not understand how it works, but I for one sure do like the store and all the little dog fashion available for us, now!

I’d have to say that of all my clothes, it’s probably my little chihuahua track sweater that I cherish the most. It is so comfortable and warm to wear, especially when you live down here in Mexico in the summer time and your owner runs the AC during the day while he works! I get to stay nice and comfortable in the artificially cooled room here, instead of shivering and shaking like a wet monkey the way I used to when I’d spend my time lazing around indoors!

Being a chihuahua is usually a fairly fun life, but it can get a little unpleasant when you have to face the crazy micro-climate that exists down near the floor when you’re not even a foot tall! The cool breezes that blow through the open doors, the little gusts of wind that whip around down here–you wouldn’t believe it! Having little chihuahua outfits like sweaters and coats and shirts keeps me warm, and the dog costumes and other fun fashion that my owner picks up for me makes life fun and playful when it’s time to unwind and enjoy ourselves! I’m very lucky to have my owner, and I’m so glad he thinks of me when he buys these little dog outfits for me! Oh!–I can hear his car pulling into the driveway! Compared to other breeds of dogs, chihuahuas are a relatively easy breed to take care of.  Their small size makes them much easier to manage, since they can’t destroy your house nearly as much as larger breed dogs if they’re unbalanced and have issues–and a lot of them do.  Many owners treat their chihuahuas like their little babies, which only messes up these poor little dogs, but I digress…  Yes, it is definitely a lot easier to take care of a little chihuahua than a larger breed dog.  The smaller size just makes them much lower maintenance because they have a lower level of need.

I notice, especially with chihuahua dogs, that a lot of people tend to purchase or pick up or adopt their tiny pet when they’re in a highly emotional moment in their life, and so they tend to select a dog that makes them feel something.  And when people look at a chihuahua, many can’t help but have that “OOOOOHHHHhhh, how cute!!!” reaction to it, and they immediately have to go over and touch it and talk to it in the high pitched, squeaky voice, and make a big scene.  So a lot of chihuahuas are brought into homes primarily because of how they look and how they make people feel when they look at these dogs.  This is probably why chihuahua clothes are so popular with owners: even with chihuahua puppies of just a few weeks, owners often doll up their newly born cuddly “chiwawa”–yes, many name their dogs after the breed itself, in this skewed way (I know: it’s a little freaky… but cute at the same time)–in costumes and take their older cute and cuddly little chiwawa dog for a spin around the park and to socialize with all the other little dogs and meet and greet the owners… it can be quite a scene, to say the least!  Especially when the owners start talking like that: “my chiwawa dog is so smart, how about your chiwawa??” hahaha.  I love it.

But no matter what your opinion on small breed dogs, you have to admit that chihuahuas are, in one way or another, kinda cute… at least the starlet-fashionistas think so in Hollywood–Paris and Tinkerbell, anyone!?  They are by far the most famous celebrity-chihuahua pairing.  Or should I say chiwawa celebrity pairing?–haha!

And of course, a lot of people find that they have to dress their teacup chihuahua–and even long hair chihuahuas–up in clothes for dogs to keep them warm, and so the clothes serve do serve a more practical function.  But these dog clothes take on another dimension when it comes to chihuahuas and other little dogs: this kind of fashion freakshow effect that seems to take over when owners go shopping for chihuahua clothes!  A lot of chihuahua owners will love buying costumes and little shirts and sweaters and coats for dogs that dress their little poochy up in a way where he looks adorable and fashion forward, in addition to providing him with some additional warmth.  And sometimes these costumes get a little out of hand and silly and.. ok, bonkers, but that’s half the fun–right?–walking down the street and seeing your neighbor with her fashion freakshow chihuahua, haha!  It makes my day every time!  This isn’t strictly with smaller breed dogs, but it’s definitely more common with them:

By the way, in case you’re wondering, it’s spelled chihuahua dogs, not as many people will write like chiuaua or chiwawa or whatever variation; it has to do with the latin pronounciation, like you’d say it if you were in Mexico, speaking spanish.  So that’s a little bit about what I notice is going on in the world with chihuahua dogs.  I normally write about chihuahua clothes, but sometimes you have to shine the spotlight on the models themselves, not just the fashion!  Cheers, owners of awesome chihuahua dogs!  Until next time!  -Michelle
