The pink fur trimmed tartan coat (on the left, above) in particular has been getting a lot of attention, lately. Some of these new chihuahua coats are thicker and are for cold weather in the winter months. Some of the other jackets for chihuahuas are a bit lighter and have fleece lining and are for cool weather. Chihuahuas tend to get insanely cold in the winter time, and so heavier dog clothing for your pet chihuahuas is a must. It’s not really optional: if you own chihuahuas and you live in a cold climate over the winter months, and you’re also a responsible dog owner who makes the effort to walk your dog every day in the winter time, you need to bundle these little guys up in their sweaters and chihuahua coats, otherwise they just freeze their little buts off. I’m not joking in the least bit, either: if you’ve ever seen a chihuahua in weather that even remotely approximates what you’d consider “cool”, then you know just how much these little hairy cutie pies shiver and shake in the cool weather.

Some of you know that chihuahuas have a very high metabolism that causes their body to shed their body heat very quickly compared to the other dog breeds, and so they cool off very rapidly when they’re not spending time in a hot place like their home country of Mexico. And if you’re living in a cold place with your chihuahua, forget about it: that’s a recipe for chihuahua popsicle!

So chihuahua winter coats really are a must if you live in the cold. I happen to live in Canada right now. And while living up here with my chihuahuas right now, and when we fly over to the UK to visit friends, I have to wrap my chihuahuas up in their warm chihuahua clothing for the winter just to keep them comfortable. The winter really is not a chihuahua’s best friend!

So I’ve been looking around at the different places you can find cool winter clothes for chihuahuas. One of my favorite spots is G.W. Little. They always have great dog clothes for chihuahuas and the other toy breeds, and their winter chihuahua clothing selection is no exception.

I always get excited when a small dog owner strikes up a conversation with me about designer dog coats because not only do we have some killer ones at the Chihuahua Clothes Shop, I had the chance to take stroll through what some would consider the American capital of smaller dogs: New York City. Believe it or not, there are a staggering number of little dogs in that city, and I was able to spend some time there with my chihuahua and two other small dogs I was fostering at the time, this past winter and soak up the sight of all the little dogs walking by in their custom dog coats and their fashionable personalized dog coats from the boutique dog stores in Manhattan. And holy cow, what an eye-opener it was!

I have new seen so many leather dog coats in my life. Central Park was like the luxury dog coats mecca, with mini schnauzers and french bulldogs sporting the latest in pet fashion, and what seemed like armies of chihuahuas and yorkies I passed by that wore designer coats for dogs. I thought L.A. was a hotbed of little dog apparel, but New York City put the city of angels to shame, at least on this trip!

I witnessed some of the most elaborate winter coats for dogs I’ve ever seen. And some of the custom whippet dog coats I saw were absolutely gorgeous in their design and their build quality. I also got to see a whole lot of pink dog coats for a team of Maltese dogs in training outside of a pet training facility in lower Manhattan, and, of course, when you visit one of those, you are going to see a pile of small doggie coats on the back of nearly every smaller dog pulling up in passenger’s seat of his owners car in the winter time, being dropped off for his day’s dog training class. It was almost unbelievable, the sheer volume of dogs there were that were outfitted in the latest designer dog fashion. This is a good city to be a dog!

I have a real soft spot in my heart for little dogs, and so I’m happy to stock some of the best small dog coats I’ve ever seen here at the Chihuahua Shop. They come in sizes for nearly every breed in dog, despite the store’s name, and like I said, they really are some of the best dog coats I’ve ever seen.

If you’re really into the designer fashion dog coats from the super upscale brands like Gucci, Prada, Versace, etc… that’s a little beyond the price range I focus on for the store, but you can check them out over at GW Little if that’s what you’re looking for, for your little dog. I find that for most small dog owners, fleece dog coats aren’t really an option. The smaller breeds of dogs cool off much faster and more easily than the bigger breeds of dogs, and so we pick up little fleece doggie coats and sweaters for our chihuahuas and our yorkies, our Maltese and our shih tzu. In particular, I’ve found that fleece coats for dogs are particularly effective at keeping little dogs warm. I used to hike around in the mountains of Canada with Namaste and few other chihuahuas I was fostering at the time. This would have normally been impossible: it would have been way too cold for the chihuahuas to be able to handle. But wearing their little chihuahua dog fleeces, they stayed toasty warm with that extra layer of fur to protect them from the crisp air and insulate them a bit and lock in their body heat. Their little fido fleece coats worked great for them!

Initially, I actually bought their fleece dog jacket coats at a local pet store. This was long before I knew anything about the elaborate, extensive collection of boutique small dog clothing stores online that we have today, but there was a decent selection of fleeces for little dogs at the big pet stores where I was at the time. Actually, it was kind of nice to be able to take my dogs in with me, into the store, and try the clothes out right there before I purchased them. If there’s one thing I don’t like about shopping online, it’s that you can’t really do that.

Browsing the isles of the local dog store, there were all these fleece dog jacket pattern coats with their cute, clever little messages on the back and their fashionable cuts and designs. Typically, when I shop for chihuahua coats at the local brick and mortar stores, the selection is rather limited, but when it comes fleece dog sweater and fleece dog vest outfits for little dogs, there’s a quite a bit of variety–more than any other type of dog clothing you’ll find at the bigger, mainstream dog and pet stores in the big cities. So you can find some quality warm dog clothing at these stores, which is nice for a change.

That said, I still very much favor the online pet shopping experience today when I’m looking for my small dog clothing. Fleece jackets for dogs and fleece jumpers, for when you want to exercise with your dog and you want to run with him outdoors when it’s cool out or even downright cold, really are a must when you have smaller dogs like chihuahuas or yorkies, and there are some very good stores online today like the Chihuahua Shop that sell quality pet fleece outfits at reasonable prices. And the selection in these online little dog clothing stores far exceeds that of the local shops where you live; I can almost guarantee it.

If you can find 10 different brands of a certain type of polar fleece dog coat for you chihuahua, you’re almost certain to be able to find 100 brands of it online. On the internet, you have the advantage of being able to shop the toy dog coat boutiques that exist all around the world, and so your selection expands massively. This is why today, whenever I have a friend from back up in Canada or over in the UK asking me for advice on where they can find a dog fleece jacket for their little Maltese pup or their shivering chihuahuas, I tell them to browse the small pet clothing stores online, first, to find what they’re looking for to help their small dogs.

Like I said, you can find quality warm dog coats at the local pet stores, but the selection is limited compared to what you’ll find at the online dog clothes stores selection, with their massive wardrobe collections of small dog coats for the winter time, autumn, and other cool times and situations you’ll find yourself in as you travel along the strange, winding path of life with your little dogs! As the proud owner of two awesome chihuahuas, I am definitely a fan of the doggie coat. I didn’t realize this when I first came to be a chihuahua owner, but these little buggers cool off rather easily and can spend a lot of their time shaking like mad if you don’t wrap them up in clothes for chihuahaus of some kind. So my default, go-to outfit for Namaste and her foster brother Custy right now are their warm doggie coats: I dress them up before we go to bed, and this way they stay warm and comfortable during the night.

Along with this, I watch Cesar Millan’s program regularly and I take his advice on treating your little dog like any other dog and taking him for a good walk every day. Well right now, I’m living in a part of the planet where the floodgates to the heavens open up frequently and it pours like I have never seen before, and so I’ve also recently become fond of the rainwear dog coat for my chihuahuas, that help them stay dry for the most part on their walks with me in the rain! My little dogs start shaking almost immediately upon getting even just a few drops of water on their fur coats, so it’s important to me to keep them dry so they can actually enjoy their walks and not feel like they’re on a torture trek!

Aside from these doggie coats, I’ve pretty much tried them all. Before living here in Mexico, we were up in Canada for the winter, and so we had the entire doggy wardrobe going on. Each of my little dogs had a dog sweater and they had the dog bomber jackets and fleece doggie coats. I even had a few velvet dog coats and suede doggie jackets for my precious Namaste, because I know how much she loves her little doggie fashion! I’m also huge fan of those cool little leather doggie jackets that make your dog look like a little canine fashion diva version of Marlon Brando in Streetcar Named Desire, and I’m also a big fan of the plaid dog jackets you can find that have those funky, classic chihuahua clothes patterns on them!

Of course, when we were indoors, the dogs had to be dressed up to the K-9s in their doggie couture, so I had them dolled up in their dog vests and, when travelling, I’d have the chiwawas sporting their little black faux mink coat! Canada for them really was like one big photo opp/fashion-fest, for these chihuahua dogs!

Aside from the above jackets and outfits, I also bought my chihuahuas a quilted doggie coat to keep them warm, and there were a few other chihuahua coats I just can’t remember–there were so many!

But today, it’s definitely the doggie rain coats that are saving the day. The Dog Whisperer says we should walk, and I agree, and so we do, and if it weren’t for the dog rain coat, my chihuahuas would be completely freezing their little buts off, so it would be hard for me to part with those right now!

Last year during Pet Fashion Week in New York City, I had the chance to sit in on the dog fashion runway shows, and I was able to catch a glimpse of the coats for small dogs that were coming down the line in this pet fashion industry and that we now carry here at the Chihuahua Clothes Shop. Chihuahua coats and jackets for other smaller dogs have been one of our best sellers at the shop, and I have to say that part of that is due to the hard work the designers put into their dog clothing work.

On the runways of Pet Fashion Week, I saw the whole gamut of doggy coats for little dogs: there were dog coats for winter and designer dog coats from luxury brands like Gucci, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton. There were cool dog coats for small dogs like chihuahuas and yorkies and Maltese puppies. There were puppy coats of every style and fashion and cut and size you could imagine, being sold at the doggie fashion vendor stands outside the runway rooms. Small dog coats were very well represented at the show!

As you’d expect, it was the coats for toy breeds that claimed most of the attention, as it’s not so much specataters’ fascination with the doggie clothes as much as the little dogs themselves that won them the lion’s share of people’s conversations. The coats for chihuahuas and the other chihuahua clothes were a very hot topic among the small dog owners, with people snapping photos and shooting video to capture the future of dog coat fashion coming down the pipe in the pet industry.

The event was a blast to attend. Not only did I get to be a part of something that raises a lot of awareness for dogs and their rights here in western culture, which is very, very cool; but I got to see all the new accessories for small dogs on their way to the online dog boutiques and specialty pet stores this year. There are even glamour girl faux fur coats for chihuahuas that can help these little critters stay warm at night when they’ve been inactive for a while and their fast metabolism lowers their body temperature a bit too much when they’re living indoors with us and they can’t really go anywhere to roam around and get some exercise.

Hi there! It’s Namaste again and I have a little window of time to mash up another quick commentary here while my owner is out, this time on the warm, snuggly issue of chihuahua coats! I’ve noticed that when it comes to chihuahua clothes, there are a lot of different styles and types of outfits that you can get for us to keep us little dogs warmer: you’ve got the shirts that add a little fashion flair to your dog, you’ve got the dresses and the costumes that dress them us and make us into a certain character that can look ridiculously cute and adorable, and then you’ve also got one of our favorites: chihuahua coats, which primarily aim to keep us little doggies warmer!

As a little dog, life can be a bit rough at times: we have much, much higher metabolism that helps us cool off in the intense heat of our native home of Mexico, but when your owner lives in a cooler country and you don’t live in a hot place like Mexico all year-round, things can really get kind of cold for us, because we cool off rapidly fast with this high metabolism, and that’s already adding to the fact that we have a short coat of hair! So it’s kind of crazy. We can go in the heat and be fine, but then we come in and within a couple minutes of coming in, we’re shivering like nuts! So chihuahua clothes are definitely appreciated, and especially if you’re living in a colder climate, oh my god–they’re a MUST for us, otherwise we’ll often be shaking in misery and it is just not fun… it’s really uncomfortable. So chihuahua coats definitely keep us warmer and a lot more comfortable!

When it comes to the different styles of chihuahua clothes, you’ve got fashionable ones that are flashy and kind of hip and trendy, you’ve got the traditional parka, there’s the fleece chihuahua coat, and there’s the big poofy vest chihuahua coats–very popular right now amongst my cool chihuahua friends!

Even sometimes in the summer, when spending a lot of time indoors at the office with my owners while they’re working away and they’ve got the air conditioning blasting for themselves and the other coworkers, down on the floor (ie: where all the cold air is) it can get really cold after a little while, especially when you’re not even a foot tall! So having a chihuahua coat on is by far the more comfortable option in this scenario, and I really like it

Hey there, it’s Mikey again! I want to talk to you quickly here a bit about chiwawa clothes and why I believe it’s better to look for clothing made specifically for chiwawas, if you’re the proud owner of one, than it is to just go after the generic small dog clothes you’ll find at the majority of the online pet clothing stores. And yes, by the way, I realize that it’s actually spelled “chihuahua”, but so many people writing to me today are using the “w” version that I’m going to do it their way off and on in this little article as a sign of support for “chiwawa” owners around the world and the imperfection of our dog culture as it exists today, lol. Chihuahua clothes are cool, but chiwawa clothing… now we’re talking! So enough silliness: I believe it is far better to look for chiwawa outfits for your long haired chihuahua than it is to search for small dog clothing when you’re online, and it’s because of how they fit.

As I’m sure you probably can imagine, all dogs have a similar shape, but the different breeds each have their own unique body proportions that make them what they are: the dachshund has that crazy long wiener dog body; the greyhound has that super slim and trim build; and the labs have those prototypical dog bodies with everything in a relatively “normal”, average proportion. When it comes to chihuahuas and smaller dogs, it’s the same story: they each have their own body shapes, but when you get down to the smaller sizes of these guys, little difference make an overall larger proportion of difference, since the differences in size amounts to an overall larger percentage of the small dog’s size, compared to a bigger dog. So when you’re buying clothing for a little dog like a chihuahua or a yorkshire terrier or a (insert small breed of dog here), your little Fido is going to end up with clothing that is much better fitting for her if it is clothing designed specifically for her breed. Of course this is true for any breed, but again, when it comes to smaller dogs, this makes a bigger difference.

Especially when you’re looking at designer pet clothes for you chiwawa pup, you’re going to want to make sure those nicer, more pricey clothes you’re picking out for her are going to fit her properly and not end looking like a dog wearing a plastic bag or something really baggy that will look goofy like that. And it’s the same story with chihuahua coats: they’re made from thicker material and heavier construction, so if you’re little dog is going to wear them, you want them to fit properly, otherwise they can rub her again and again in the wrong place and lead to rashes and rub burns and other nasty unpleasantness for your precious little princess! Any kind of designer pet boutique will normally advertise their clothing is for a specific breed of dog–ours, for example, has clothing designed primarily with chihuahuas in mind. These companies put their designer labels on dog clothing with pride and obviously want you to think highly of their pet products, so they usually go the extra mile when designing their pet fashion to be a bit more tailored for specific breeds. If you’re looking for dog clothes online and you’re going for that luxury pet look for you chihuahua girl, then you’re almost certainly going to want to make sure the clothes are designed for chihuahuas and fit her well. And again, this isn’t just going to affect her look, it’s going to play a big role in how comfortable she is in the clothing.

Of course, the same is true when you’re shopping for chihuahua clothes cheap enough to buy in bulk: if you’re buying clothes that are inexpensive, a lot of little dog owners get so excited by the fact that they found a great deal on the chihuahua clothes that they forget to check to see if they fit properly! And these clothes are almost always made from harsher, less forgiving material than the more expensive dog clothing, and so you need to check to make sure the discount dog dresses fit your little female chiwawa properly so it’s not causing her that irritation to her sensitive underbelly and underarm area that I know my own chiwawas can develop problems with I’m not careful with choosing the right clothes for them!

If you’re trying to find raincoats for small dogs, the same hold true, especially when you’re dealing with chihuahua dog coats like these made from rubber materials! You need to be careful with dog coats for small dogs in general because of the increased discomfort you’re little chi will experience if she’s not the right size for these clothes, so really just make sure you’re looking through coats that have been designed specifically for your chihuahua (or whatever breed of little dog you have) when you’re shopping for them, if you have that option.

Chihuahua collars are the same story, though not to the same degree. Obviously with a chiuaua, you’re going to want to use smaller dog collars and leashes for her, but you have a little more leeway when it comes to the selection with these.

Some of the dog clothing boutiques (including our own) allow you to customize a cool collar for your small breed puppy. They’re these crystal-studded fashion dog collars you can do custom lettering on so your chihuahua can wear her name right on her little collar, and it’s very cool because it’s just another way you get to customize you’re adorable dog’s look. You can find embroidered dog collars for all the little breeds of dogs because there isn’t a whole lot of variation when it comes the shape or size of a little dog’s neck! So you don’t have be quite as vigilant and careful when browsing and looking for these.

With chihuahua costumes, it’s best if you can find custom made get-ups for your small dog, but really, the point of most costumes–especially if we’re talking about chihuahua Halloween costumes–is to make your dog look a little silly and share a funny moment with her and have a laugh and lavish the absurdity of the whole thing, so a little extra wiggle room inside the costume usually isn’t a bad thing.
