Of course, a lot of chihuahua owners will pick out little raincoats for dogs and the other usual cheap dog clothes that we all love and know. These are the practical outfits we use to keep our chiwawa pups warm and dry and cozy when the weather to crap and it’s time to walk our chihuahuas. We dress them out in their cool chihuahua sweaters and their little chihuahua outfit, and we get used to seeing dogs in clothes: it becomes a regular part of our world.

But when you come across a chihuahua dressed up in these extravagant accessories for little dogs, it can really make you stop and think “…wow!” Chihuahuas wearing hats for dogs, chihuahuas wearing sparkling socks for dogs, chihuahuas wearing haute couture chihuahua costumes: these are not every day experiences for most people–even seasoned chihuahua fashion addicts!

My friend’s dog was wearing one of her dog sweatshirts and had a dog collar tag and a tiny little dog tiara from dog accessories UK–or some similar brand: I can’t quite remember. But it was amazing. And the conversations it sparked at this little gathering were numerous! Teacup chihuahuas are cute alone, without dog clothes! But wearing these chihuahua accessories with her tiny dog outfit… I can’t emphasize what an impact it made. It was like walking into a Dali painting or something and seeing the manifestation of luxury in the tiny, bite-size, chihuahua form! Ohh! She was incredibly cute, even for the standards we are used to as chihuahua owners who dress our little doggies in xxs dog clothes–even for what I am used to as the owner of a chihuahua clothes shop. I was impressed.

A dog wearing a dog outfit is nothing special. There’s nothing new to be seen–though they are irresistibly cute–in a chihuahua dressed in different puppy sweaters for chihuahuas each day. You will see the usual fare of chihuahua t-shirts and little dog sweaters on a little dog, and you will smile. But that dog probably will not blow you away the way this little dog with her pet accessories did me. Chihuahua accessories on a little dog seem to give it that little something extra–that X-factor–that just makes them stand out from the rest, grab your attention, and make them hard to forget. It’s why I’m going to be digging around and trying to find the best accessories for chihuahuas I can find anywhere for sale, and I will be bringing them to you soon… Stay tuned! When you own chihuahuas and you enjoy dressing them up in chihuahua clothes, you tend to visit a lot of doggie boutique shops. What I’ve been noticing lately is that these dog boutiques area really focusing on the banal and boring segment of dog supplies and would do so much better, I think, if they focused on selling the fun goods that people seem to love buying at the Chihuahua Shop and a few of the other chihuahua clothing store business I’ve been keeping tabs on.

I mean, I walk into these doggy boutique shops and what do I see? I see a miniature version of a major pet store: dog food, hair brushes, leashes and leads to fit every breed known to man, and even huge dog houses for bigger dogs. They have no focus. These doggie boutiques are trying to cater to everyone and, in doing so, they’re catering to no one. I walk into these dog clothing shops that, from their name and advertising on the outside of their store front, lead you to believe are going to be an entire store full of chihuahua clothes but are instead a small section of designer chihuahua clothes surrounded by many more generic pet supplies, again, these doggie boutiques trying to be copy the approach of the major doggie shops, just without the money to afford enough space to be one of those major pet store places.

And I think it’s a mistake. These doggie boutique shops have such an advantage over the huge dog stores because they are small and because they can choose to focus in on just one area of the dog clothing world. If you ask me, a little doggie clothing store that specializes and only sells the best small dog clothing is far more valuable than a store of the same size that is essentially trying to be a jack of all doggie trades. A small doggie boutique that focuses in on the realm of small dog clothing and sticks to selling those chihuahua clothes and yorkie outfits and Maltese costumes and shih tzu dresses, and very little else, will draw the crowds because they’ll become an authority on small doggie clothes over time and people will know them for being that way and as the place to go when you want to pick up some chihuahua clothes for your little dog.

Again, I think it’s far more valuable to the customer to have a niche chihuahua boutique that JUST sells chihuahua clothes and chihuahua accessories and things for chihuahuas than for that same person to have access to yet another pet store, but simply crammed into a smaller space and with less selection.

But that’s my opinion, and I can’t speak for all dog owners. But that is why I made the Chihuahua Shop into the kind of dog boutique that just focuses on small dog clothing for chihuahuas and the other small breeds out there. It’s a major emerging trend, having a chihuahua fashion dog walking beside you on a leash or tucked under your arm as you walk through the busy mall of a major cosmopolitan city, today, and it’s probably due in part to the ever-increasing popularity of the chihuahua clothes that owners of these little guys are flocking to in droves right now. These little fashion chihuahua doggies seem to be coming out of the woodwork where I live, and it’s almost freaking me out a bit!

Now, the Chihuahua Shop carries a lot of small dog fashion clothes for giving your chihuahua pup that injection of extra chihuahua style. Whereas some owners will be watching those fashion show dogs strutting their stuff in their chihuahua clothes down the runway on television, others will have their chihuahua dogs all spiffed up in chihuahua fashion dogs outfits there, right in front of them, with their little chi prancing around and ready to make it big in the Broadway spotlight with the right training. These are the people who take fashionable dogs seriously and buy all the fashion dog accessories they can find for their chihuahuas and their yorkies and their Maltese pups, and if anyone is going to be famous in the land of chihuahuas and these other small breed dogs, it’s them.

But lately, I’ve been spotting a few chihuahua clothes fashion fanatics who could almost be said to be taking the whole fashionable dogs thing a little too far. Down here in the Puerto Vallarta area of Mexico where I’m living right now, it’s bloody hot, and it’s not usually the type of climate you’ll want to dress your chihuahua up in any sort of seriously heavy chihuahua clothing if you can help it. Where you’ll see a lot of people getting their chihuahua fashion dogs fix is indoors, in the heavily air conditioned rooms where their chihuahuas are down on the floor, in their little chihuahua dog beds, resting and inactive, and otherwise shivering and shaking to death without their little dog fashion outfits on their back. You don’t see a lot a chihuahuas wearing their chihuahua sweaters outside in the heat, and thank god!–except for lately, perhaps with the increasing popularity of the Beverly Hills Chihuahua scene in Puerto Vallarta, I’m seeing chihuahuas dressed up in layers of fashion forward chihuahuas clothing, and it’s crazy!

I’ve seen at least five different chihuahuas dressed up in three or more layers of chihuahua clothes in the past week alone, and while I am fully a fan of dog fashion, when you’re layering clothes over clothes with chihuahua accessories on your little dog like this in the heat, when it’s an oven outside right now, this August of 2011, that’s really pushing the boundaries of what’s considered humane treatment of an animal if you ask me! I know they mean well, but these little hairy chihuahua buggers have it rough in the heat like this without all that insulating fashion dogs clothing covering them up!

So please, if you’re going to make your chihuahua into a fashion dog with his little chihuahua clothes, do so responsibly! I know you, as someone who reads this chihuahua fashion blog, would not make this mistake, but if you see anyone who’s really pushing it with too much fashion dog accessories and clothing on their dogs this summer, ask them what on Earth they’re doing

Seeing some of the new luxury small dog accessories at the Chihuahua Clothes Store reminds me of of an experience I had last year as a very excited small dog owner who had the chance to shop Beverly Hills and Rodeo Drive for Chihuahua clothing and accessories for my little dogs back at home. I was on my way to Thailand for a few months and had a day-long stopover in L.A., so I raced out of the airport, into a cab, and my friend an I hauled ass over to the small dog fashion mecca of Beverly Hills for an afternoon!

The whole small dog accessory shopping experience reminded me a lot of Chloe’s experience at the start of Beverly Hills Chihuahua, in all seriousness. There were a lot of designer collars for small dogs and little dog booties and these customizable rhinestone dog collars in the windows of all these little pet fashion boutiques along the rich streets of The Hills. I’d seen dog accessories before when shopping for my chihuahua dogs and my other smaller foster dogs, but this was a pet shopping experience on steroids.

There were puppy accessories costing in excess of $1000 a pop, for a diamond studded chihuahua collar charm. There were puppy supplies from luxury labels like Gucci and Chanel, their luxury small dog carrier handbags that would open up on the end to let your little dog in and out. It’s insane what you can find in the way of little dog accessories when you’re in this part of Los Angeles!

There were even small dog clothes woven with cashmere–I have never seen chihuahua outfits so nice. Seeing the rest of the accessories for dogs, the little bling chihuahua accessories and the custom dog collars like we actually carry here at the Chihuahua Shop–it almost made me dizzy, thinking of all the fashion possibilities for dressing up my little doggies back at home!

I’ve been working to bring in some new cheap chihuahua clothes to the Chihuahua Shop here, but it has not been easy: dog clothing prices are rising and it is seriously not easy to find quality chihuahua clothes for cheap right now. That said, I am working on it, but at the moment I don’t have much of anything below $25 US in the way of a full chihuahua outfit. We have these awesome chihuahua accessories like cheap chihuahua booties and socks you can find at the Chihuahua Shop, some cool and cheap chihuahua hats, as well as the very popular chihuahua collar charms pictured below that are selling like wildfire. But in terms of full outfit cheap chihuahua clothes for the inexpensive dog clothes hunters, I’m not seeing anything I like right now besides the odd second-hand dog clothing sale once in a while that you’ll see in the local flea markets when you’re lucky enough to come by a chihuahua owner who’s getting rid of some spare chihuahua clothes!

When I browse around for these cheaper chihuahua clothes and other cheap toy dog breed clothing, all I find are stores that have these very thin-fabric, fragile cheap chihuahua clothes dog t-shirts and pet coats that honestly look kind of crappy and not-so-stylish. I don’t mean to bash these other places, it’s just not my style. I’m more of the opinion that if I’m going to spend money on something, I want it to be worthwhile: I want it to look super cool, I want it to last, …and I have to like it! Cheap chihuahua clothes like these little denim dog clothes and plaid pants I see being sold at some these other places just make me shake my head and wonder sometimes, but hey: different strokes for different folks, right?

Are there ANY Cheap Chihuahua Clothes?

With that said, there is one store I’ve seen that has insanely cheap chihuahua clothing if you just want to get your feet wet with these clothes and pick out a dog tank top or something simple for your little dog’s first outfit to try out and see if she likes wearing clothes (which I can almost certainly guarantee you she will, haha!). It’s the Dog Dug dog clothing shop, and they have this insanely huge selection of pet clothing for owners who want to be frugal and not spend very much on their first dog clothes:

You can even find wholesale chihuahua clothes at this place, and the variety of the outfits and little dog fashion they stock is impressive. You can find everything from small stretch cotton cheap chihuahua clothes socks to these funky bumble bee costume coats for your little chiwawa doggy, and just about every other article of clothing in different sizes–everything you can imagine, and then some.

Where Can I See Your Best Cheap Chihuahua Clothes?

So yes, I am working away at bringing some cheap chihuahua clothes to the Chihuahua Htore, here, but I have to first find some I like. I’m not willing to trade quality for price here at this store, so when I find some cheap chihuahua dresses I like and think are worthy of the shop, I’ll see if I can bring them to the Chihuahua Shop, along with some other low-cost pet clothing. Fast forward to today, when I’ve now owned chihuahuas for a number of years and have some experience taking care of these little cutie pies. I’ve always been one to pamper my pooches and I love buying chihuahua clothes for my dogs, but a little while ago, I got super fed up with the deceptive marketing of the different dog clothing stores out there that are selling clothes for chihuahuas, and I finally decided to do something about it.

I got tired of looking at the pictures in the online dog clothing boutiques, getting excited, buying the dog clothes I wanted, and then having them show up late, and the chihuahua clothes being entirely something other than what I expected them to be, and the shirts and sweaters and a lot of the advertised pet costumes being far lower quality than what was advertised. In short, I got tired of being disappointed with small dog vendors online. So I decided to start my own chihuahua store and focus in on just clothing for chihuahuas and similarly small breeds and create a store that sells the kind of small dog clothing that I would want to buy. And I wanted there to be a store selling these clothes that actually has good customer service, that gets back to you promptly when you have a question and that delivers their clothes to you–the customer–on time, every time, and puts you first. Is that too much to ask for these days?! I don’t think it is, and so that’s really why I started my online chihuahua clothes shop.

Now, is the chihuahua shop for everyone? No, it isn’t. Some people like different kinds of clothing for their dogs, like the ultra luxury (and insanely priced) clothing for their little dogs that cost up into the thousands of dollars range, and that’s really not the focus of my store. Personally, I’m into chihuahua outfits that fit well, that are made from high quality materials, and that actually look like the pictures on store’s site, and that don’t leave you broke and selling your clothes off your own back just so you can clothe your little chi (wouldn’t that be a sweet story, though )

At my chihuahua store, I try to not just include the standard variety of dog sweaters and shirts and coats that you’ll find in most chihuahua boutiques, but also some very high quality chihuahua accessories like gorgeous Swarovski crystal-studded dog necklaces and other similarly fine dog jewelry. I’m very much into dog bling, so I do my best to find the latest and greatest brand of customizable puppy collars (pictured left) that you can order with your own little dog’s name on in rhinestones and jewels, in your color of choice, so you can beautify and pamper your chiwawa in the luxurious lifestyle she deserves! It’s actually kind of insane how many quality small dog products and how much quality small dog apparel is at the Chihuahua Shop right now. I’m working tirelessly to find the best chihuahua accessories on the market right now, like the latest in dog fashionista dog carriers, for example. And I only say it’s insane because of how much stuff for long hair and apple head and deer head chihuahuas (and really: all the other small breeds that are super small like these guys) that I see in the store right now: I’m only interested in stocking super high quality stuff and if it isn’t good, I’m not putting it out there, the way that some chihuahua stores do. It’s wild how much quality effort has been put into make these little dogs cute and adorable and comfortable. These little chihuahuas have got it made–I’m telling you!

Hey again, it’s Mikey, and I want to chat quickly here about some of the super cool chihuahua accessories I’ve seen showing up at the chihuahua clothes store recently! Normally when you think of dog accessories, you think of toys and leads and balls your little dog can play with and things of that nature–at least I do anyway… But little did I know how incredibly small my imagination has been: I’ve been sneaking into the storage room and having a peek at some of the new additions we’ve been making to the chihuahua store, and I am BLOWN AWAY at the level of decadence pet owners are taking the whole notion of chihuahua clothes to, today!

The first thing that hits me with all the different accessories for chihuahuas my eyes have seen tonight is the chihuahua jewelery: not only do we stock custom chihuahua collars that you can brand with your own small dog’s name in stones and do in your favorite color, there’s also things like the collar charms (pictured above) that you attach to your chihuahua’s collar to amp up the bling factor. I couldn’t believe it!–they’re so damn cool!

And there’s also these little chihuahua necklaces specifically made for small dogs, that have all of these embedded Swarovski crystals and looks nicer than most human jewelery I’ve seen! This is truly for the dog who loves drawing attention and walking in the K9 spotlight–without a freaking doubt! There’s also these adorable hair pins for little dogs that have longer hair, like a long haired chihuahua or a maltese, which are also super bling-tacular!

Of course, I’m seeing some great updates being made to the standard leads and leashes designs, with some beautiful new models of those basic accessories for chihuahuas, and a also some great little harnesses for chiwawa owners who don’t like walking their little dog with a leash around their neck (personally, I don’t have a problem with it, but I know a lot of people do not like the idea of it, and so I’m trying to bring in some more little dog harnesses for chihuahuas and these other toy breeds with more delicate, petite builds!

Of course, for the top and bottom (not that bottom!) of your precious and surely soon-to-be-famous chihuahua, we have little doggy hats and chihuahua pet socks, which you can check out on the left there! The hats make a perfect addition to any cutie pie dog outfits you have for your chi, that you want to complete and really take the look over the edge of cuteness, haha. And the little pet socks are adorable and great so freaking cute on little dogs! I’ve been making my little chihuahua–Namaste–wear them on the beach down here in the summer to keep her poor little paws protected from the burning hot sand on her afternoon walk, and she definitely seems to enjoy her beach walks more now and actually enjoys the scenery a bit instead of lifting her little feet up and down again like the little Mexican jumping bean she can be!

When people think of chihuahua clothes and shirts and coats for smaller dogs, they’re commonly perceived strongly in the light of fashion over function. How often have we seen Paris Hilton in the media with her teacup chihuahua Tinkerbell dressed up in a fantastically funky chihuahua clothes outfits? Many tend to associate Paris Hilton and a lot of the negative aspects of celebrities with the act of dressing your dog in chihuahua clothes, but the reality is there are some very practical reasons for bundling up your pooch in shirts, sweaters, and even little chihuahua costumes, besides making her into a mini K9 fashionista, and they have to do with keeping her warm and comfortable.

And of course, there’s the much more common reason people dress up their chihuahuas in cute little chihuahua clothes: to make their little chihuahua dogs look insanely adorable! Yes, some of us tend to focus on the functional aspects when dressing up our chiwawa doggies in their cute chihuahua sweaters and chihuahua coats and their other funky clothes for chihuahuas. But from what I’ve seen in the dog owners I’ve met, dressing you chihuahua up in chihuahua clothing and the latest small dog fashion is usually much more about having fun and enjoying watching your little dog run around in articles of chihuahua clothes than it is for making her comforable and making her day, if I’m honest!

With that said, whether you have a teacup chihuahua, or you’ve got a long haired chihuahua, or maybe you’re a proud owner of a chihuahua rescue dog; clothing your little dog in chihuahua clothes is often a good idea because these little dogs tend to cool off easily and can spend most of their time shivering and shaking if they’re not wearing these little chihuahua clothes designed for chihuahua doggies to keep them warm. A lot of smaller dogs like chihuahuas come from hot climates and so they shake like this and get cold when we bring them into our cool homes in colder environments and we run the A/C and the fans and we don’t dress our dogs up in chihuahua fashion to not only make them irresistibly adorable, but to make them more comfortable.

Having shared my home with many chihuahuas (with each chihuahua clothed in little sweaters and chihuahua outfits and t-shirts–and yes, even adorable small chihuahua’s clothing costumes too) over the past few years, even in their native country, Mexico, I’ve found that little dogs with short hair–like many chihuahuas–get cold quite often when they spend time indoors and they’re not moving around and being active, and even the long haired chihuahua does this, too. When we bring them into our more relaxed, indoor lives, even in warmer climates, these little dogs get cold and really prefer (once they’re used to it) wearing their chihuahua clothes and having an extra layer of “fur” or two on their back, to help keep them warm.  And if you live with your chihuahua dogs in a cold climate, then you know what I’m talking about, and you probably have an entire wardrobe full of chihuahua clothes for them!

I’ll say that there definitely is a controversy among dog owners surrounding the topic of dressing your dog up in shirts and cute little chihuahua clothes costumes. Many people think it’s insane and ridiculous and that it’s borderline abusive to dress your toy chihuahua up and that you’re damaging their self esteem, and on and on…. And Cesar Millan would have us see us our chihuahuas as dogs first, before chihuahua clothes-clad”cutie pie chi chi”–the personality of the dog–second, and I totally agree with him. But who are we kidding?! Let’s be honest here: we brought these little munchkins into our lives so we could dress them up in chihuahua clothes costumes and make them adorable …while taking care of them, hahaha!

There are a lot of fashionable clothes for smaller breeds of dogs out there. Take a stroll through your local pet store and you’re bound to find an isle with chihuahua clothes and attire for other small breeds that you can dress your dog up with. Even Amazon.com carries a decent selection of chihuahua clothes today. Now, I’m not going to bash them: Amazon is a great company and I love their service, but the clothes I’ve seen on their site–the chihuahua wedding dresses and the chihuahua tuxedos, and all those other funky chihuahua outfits I’ve perused over the past few years on their site–all seem a tad bland to my eyes. I’m not saying you can’t find good chihuahua clothes for little dogs from Amazon, I’m just saying I think you can find better, higher quality ones, elsewhere.

Personally, these dog clothes are too much for my wallet to handle, but again, if you’ve got the cash and you want to make your credit card bleed crimson, you can head over the chihuahua clothes section of G.W. Little because, if I’m not mistaken, they carry some very, very nice luxury brands of chihuahua clothes and I would definitely check them out first if that is what you’re looking for, to completely spoil your chihuahua and drown her in small dog clothing that’s fit for K-9 royalty.
