Well it’s been an exciting week, as it always is whenever renowned small dog clothes designer Susan Lanci releases a new fashion piece for chihuahuas and other small breeds of dogs! This time, she’s really outdone herself with the exotic leopard dog muff jacket (pictured left).

As with all of her dog fashion designs, it uses genuine Ultrasuede from Japan, Swarovski crystals from the Austrian crystal giant, and looks super stylish and classy, as is always the case with this true leader in the small dog clothing world.

A bit about Susan Lanci:

Dog shirts for small dogs are everywhere in pet stores today. If you have a chihuahua and you go looking for small chihuahua shirts, you’re going to be inundated with options to choose from. The real burden when shopping for these small dog shirts is the burden of choice! There are a lot of different types of dog sweaters for small dogs today and I just want to discuss them briefly here. If you have a chihuahua or a yorkie or a bichon frise or a maltese, or any other breed of small dog AND you live in a cooler climate, it’s almost certain that you own at least a few small dog sweaters. These smaller dogs tend to shed their body heat much quicker that bigger dog dog, and so having little sweaters for small dogs is usually necessary for keeping them comfortable when they’re hanging out with you in a cold room or when out on a walk with you in the cold. It’s been a blast lately stocking the Chihuahua Shop with the new clothes for small dogs! Some of the little dog clothing that has been coming in for the new season is totally adorable, and a lot of the chihuahua clothes outfits are to die for!!

Talking with my neighbors and some of my dog lover friends, it seems a lot of dog people first thing of designer clothes for small dogs when first thinking about small dog clothing. They envision the frilly laced chihuahua clothes and the fashionable small dog clothing with all the bows and ribbons, and the haute couture outfits for tiny dogs that we’ve all come to love and adore on small dogs on TV, in the movies, and maybe even on your own dog if you like to splurge on new fashion for your chihuahua!

But of course, there is also practical clothing for dogs like coats for jackets, and this is true for virtually all breeds of dog. When you live around dog lovers who probably have more clothes for small dogs than they do for themselves, you get into some interesting conversations about chihuahua clothes and other costumes and clothes for little dogs. Sometimes we simply discuss the new additions to the Chihuahua Shop, and other times it’s more a conversation about what our smaller dogs would dress us in if the tables were turned!–which, by the way, I really don’t care to think about too hard, haha.

Small dog clothing is everywhere in the dog world today, and it’s likely because these small dog outfits are so darn cute. And for the sake of our chihuahuas and or little toy dogs of every breed, I think this is pretty cool because it means they are going to be getting more attention and affection from their owners!

It’s been fun going through the new dog harnesses for small dogs showing up at the chihuahua clothes shop: we just got in these new harness vests for little dogs that work great as the body harness for dogs you’re taking on their walks, but that are also fashionable and look cool, and not like a tangled web of neon nylon like some of the harnesses of little dog’s I’ve seen. Along with the chihuahua clothes and small dog dresses we carry that have the harness loop built right into the outfit, these harnesses are at the top in terms of style for your little dog!

Actually just a few days ago, I had the chance to see a pair of gorgeous dachshund harnesses on these two little dogs at the vet in the marina area here in Puerto Vallarta. I had to take Namaste the chihuahua in to get her eyes checked because they’ve been very red over the past few days and I just wanted to be safe. But these two dachshunds came in leashed up on their designer dog harnesses for smaller doggies, and they looked so stylish! I’ve seen a lot of little chihuahuas and yorkies and shi tzus and other small dogs on the marina walk here in PV that have a dog harness for small dog pets on them, but few have ever compared with these super stylin’ little silvery emerald green vest harnesses these dachshunds were wearing at the vet’s office!

I notice some owners talking about buying a dog harness to stop pulling on their little dog, or rather, to get their little dog to stop pulling on the walk. As someone who has owned a few dogs in his time and worked with literally thousands of rescue dogs at shelters around the world, I’ve never seen a dog harness make your dog stop pulling you, in fact it’s usually the opposite: it creates a pulling/tracking reaction in your dog a lot of the time, which is why search and rescue workers use them on their dogs all the time. But for the stylish small dog owner, I am definitely for the dog harness UK style trend of the dog harness pink lace corset small dog harness vests that seem to be all over the place in the gay district of Puerto Vallarta right now! I’m not saying it’s going to make your walk any easier, but it sure will make your little dog stand out, and if you do it right, your little chihuahueño could be the next local fashion icon where you live and frequent!

Around the marina sidewalk surrounding the Pacific Ocean here in Vallarta, I get to see a lot of little pups sporting their harnesses for small dogs on their walks with their energetic owners. They come breezing by, running along the red brick roads and up, onto the raised pebble sidewalks, under the white mast tarps and into the long stretches of marina walkway along the bay, waves lapping up against the shore rocks along the beach, people and their pet dogs out and enjoying the sun in their stylish small dog attire, and for some owners, the harness for dogs allows them to enjoy these moments more because they can relax with the though that their little dog’s neck isn’t going to be hurt by any sudden jerks or movements on the leash. Personally, I’m of the opinion that when it comes to the debate between collars and dog leads and harnesses, the collar-lead system works better. In fact, I learned a simple trick a little while ago for how to use a leash to walk your dog, without any collar, that mimics the natural tightening of a choke collar, only without the heavy metal piece of ugly jewelry around your dog’s neck! For me, I find this works best with how I walk my chihuahuas and other smaller foster dogs.

Anyway, I’m getting a little off track here: I think the nylon dog harnesses for little dogs are great, I think the leather harness for dogs and those other walking harness for dogs contraptions are great–anything that gets you out of the house and into nature with your dog, walking together, is a good thing if you ask me. Personally, I’m more into the fashionable harness for small dog styles that you can find today, but that’s coming from a guy who’s completely immersed in the world of clothing for chihuahuas, so I’m definitely fashion biased! But overall, you have to go have to choose a small harness for your little dog that YOU like.

Pug clothes have got to be the truest sign that the universe has both a sense of humor and an adorable sense of fashion. That’s probably why we added some of the best pug clothing I’ve seen anywhere to the store, along with the fact that these clothes for small dogs are among my absolute favorite pet fashion outfits of all time! As someone who works in the pet fashion industry, I’ve seen a log of cool, funky accessories for dogs and chihuahua clothes that can make any teacup chihuahua look so cute it could kill you, but clothes for pugs usually take it even further because they’re combining with those fantastic wrinkles, and render your little dog an adorable rump of wrinkled fashion dog fun! Haha!

A have a friend who is literally obsessed with clothes for pugs. She has four pugs she calls her own, and she’s given them each a style of their own. Each pug dog has its own wardrobe with specific clothes he or she wears, and, according to my friend, they each have their own preferences as to which do clothes they like to wear. I almost died laughing the first time my friend related this news to me, but then I stepped into her apartment for the first time and I simply couldn’t laugh: I was too blown away by the portal I had just walked through when I entered through the door and into this world of PUG. It was overwhelming.

Two of the little wrinkled beasts were wearing designer pug dog jumpers, looking ready to run a marathon at any instant! Another one was wearing is pug fashion outfit that looked like pug clothing from the Lady Gaga line or something outlandish and otherworldly: it had these crystal pieces jetting off of the back and shoulders of the dog, making it look like Gaga’s “Poker Face” costume, only adapted into a little pug pet fashion!

And the last pug had on this funky neon pink dog vest underneath two layers of pug coats. I asked my friend why on earth her pug was wearing so many layers when it’s well known that pugs can overheat so easily. Apparently, this guy loves to hang out with his owner in the air conditioned bedroom in her apartment, but he freezes and starts shivering without the clothes. Hence the pug with the nearly onion-layered pet apparel!

I’m really not sure how I collected so many friends that are all into small dog clothes to this degree. Believe me: there are many, and it almost freaks me out when I think about it… how exactly did this happen?? It must be that secret thing and “the law of attraction,” lol.

Small dog apparel: it lets you dress up your dog in cute designer dog clothes, it’s fun, it helps your chihuahua stay warm on cool nights by wrapping her in a layer of chihuahua clothes, and it makes stalkers out of perfect strangers at the grocery store.

Let me explain.

As a pet fashion enthusiast, I collect a lot of pet apparel for my little chihuahuas. Sometimes it’s a cute dog fashion coat from the Chihuahua Shop here; other times, it’s something from the luxury dog clothes for small dogs line of another online boutique. But either way, when my chihuahuas leave the house, they are well dressed!!

Well when I leave the house with my dogs, they’re usually dressed up in some of their best dog clothing. And, as it happens, when I go grocery shopping, I like to sneak my chihuahua Namaste into the store with me, to do a little spontaneous and covert K-9 grocery shopping! I usually slip her into my backpack after we step out of the car and we’re walking through the parking lot to get to the store, walk in, and then place her in that little top shelf of the buggy cart, on top of the backpack and using it as a pillow while I wheel her around and do my thing, usually without any store employees noticing (important).

So yesterday, we’re walking through the parking lot, she has her adorable chihuahua clothes on, and as I pick her up to put her in the backpack so I can sneak her in past through the door guard person here at the local “Mega” here in Puerto Vallarta, down here in Mexico, this rather large woman in pink sweat pants and a huge leopard-print visor comes charging from around this parked minivan and starts gushing about how cute Namaste is and how she has small dogs of her own, and how she loves to dress them up in yorkie clothes, and this and that and the entire kitchen sink of a conversation! I couldn’t get a word in as she walked beside me and I stuck Namaste into my backpack.

“Are you going to sneak her in?!” she announced to the entire neighborhood in her screechy voice. “I hope so,” I smiled back, now nearing the door and about to walk through. She had this look of excitement like she was going to explode or something: what is it about the mixture of chihuahuas and pet clothes that makes people loose it like this? I could see if she had never seen puppy clothes on a little dog before, but this is a person who lives with yorkies, who dresses them up in their dog coats and dog sweaters frequently, I presume. So what’s the deal with her squeal? Lol, I have to have fun with it: I’m only joking because this woman was super over the top with her adoration for Namaste and the small dog apparel she was wearing.

Anyways, I get into the store and I’m shopping around, the woman has left do to her shopping, and the usual mixture of kids and assorted other shoppers are noticing and coming up to pet the fashionable and increasingly famous chihuahua, Namaste. I’m walking through the pet supplies isle, looking to see what they have in the way of small dog collars and if they have any pet couture collars like the last grocery store I visited did (I couldn’t believe it!), when the woman sees me again and start billowing out about how cute she looks atop my grocery cart. This is not good. Now everybody is looking and staring, including the store staff.

I quicken my pace and give this jovial woman another quick smile and a knod, trying to break away, but she seems to keep following me around the store from isle to isle! She goes on and on, talking about the beds for smaller dogs and the pet furniture she found at the dog store the other day, and how she likes to use small dog harnesses on her yorkies instead of a leash. She starts talking about her shopper’s appetite for petite dog clothes–something I can relate to–so I stop my shopping for a minute to talk with her about chihuahua clothes and the Chihuahua Shop I run here, and as it turns out, she’s actually a cool person who takes good care of her dogs.

Unfortunately, it’s at this point when I spot the grocery store floor manager over the shoulder of my new, round, pink, small dog fashion enthusiast friend, and he’s walking toward us, and he doesn’t look very happy. It turns out that bringing your little dog into the store, even when she stays inside the little seat in the push cart and no matter how cute she looks in clothes for little dogs, is in violation of store policy, and I would have to take her out. And so I did …after a series of zig-zags through a few isles and a quick stop through the checkout line

Perhaps that’s one of the better parts of shopping for small dog apparel online: you don’t have to deal with “store policy” like this and you can have your chihuahua right there with you, browsing through the small dog clothing to your heart’s content. I’ve been looking around at the dachshund clothing selection out there in the online pet stores and the local dog clothing boutiques, and I have to say that I’m not very impressed.

Any dachshund owner who’s interested in small dog clothing knows how hard it can be to find clothes that are both small and long enough to fit your dachshund correctly… I’ve been looking around at dachshund jackets and dachshund coats in these different pet stores and I’m just not seeing anything that really fits the bill.

I did find a few dachshund raincoats online that, from their photos, looked like they’d fit the bill for most cutie pie fashionista wiener dogs, but for the most part, it’s the collars and leads that seemed to be marketed the most for dachshunds, which is a little unusual since a collar or lead isn’t usually bred-specific! I know that if you have a really small dog like a chihuahua, then sure: you might want a super small collar for her, but otherwise, with the bigger dogs, usually a lead is a lead and a collar is a collar. But I digress…

I’ve been wanting to bring in some dachshund costumes to the store, because what could be more ridiculously adorable than a little furry sausage wearing a dog costume?! Seriously, dachshunds are adorable enough as they are, but you pair them up with their little dachshund clothes and you have something that could almost kill most older people by heart attack caused by K-9 cuteness overload!

Off all the dachshund dresses, I’d probably say the bridal set is the most adorable, keeping with the general trend in small pet clothes. The bride and groom set for dogs is a tough act to beat in the category of cute! And it’s really no different with clothes for dachshunds, only they look even more darling!

Of course, it’s always better if you can buy clothing for your specific breed of dog, so if you have a Maltese, you’re going to pick out Maltese clothes, if you have chihuahua, you’ll pick up chihuahua clothing, and so on!

Little fluffy white Maltese dogs look particularly adorable in their little sweaters and shirts, and of course, if you’re giving your Maltese a summer cut, and you’re inside in an air conditioned room, these little dogs can get pretty cold after a while of just hanging out and chillin’. I know that some people think that it’s weird to dress up your dog in clothing. They remark that it’s “wrong” and it’s borderline animal abuse, but the fact is that these clothes help your little dog stay more comfortable, they dress up your dog, and yes, they do make your dog even more cute. Don’t get me wrong: I actually think it is kind of weird. I wasn’t a huge fan of chihuahua clothes or anything like it just a few years ago, but after a little time of owning a small dog, I definitely came around and now I love it. And so do my dogs: my chihuahuas and my other little foster dogs actually come running over to me when I pick up their chihuahua clothes so I can put it on them! And as I said, they seem to really like it, provided it’s comfortable and not itchy or bothering them because it’s too tight for their body

And there’s nothing to say there’s anything wrong with having your dog look even more cute, I mean I know that small Maltese dogs are already pretty darn adorable, but when you dress them up in clothing, it just takes that natural cuteness and amps it up and multiplies it by about a factor of ten. It’s a little hard to imagine Maltese dogs getting any cuter than they already are with their little furry faces and that white fluff, but believe me: when you have Maltese clothing on them, the sky is the limit for what you can do with them fashion-wise with bows and ties and that whole thing!

And it’s a whole lot of fun, especially with kids (and…err… the young at heart!) who like to make-believe and role play. These little clothes allows them to get into the character, into the role and really imagine and fantasize story lines even better, letting them play in the land of fantasy, which is a lot of fun!

And of course if you have other dog owner friends, nothing will bond you faster to someone else who is into dog clothing than dressing your own Maltese in her Maltese clothes; it’s an endless conversation piece–almost to an insane degree!

But yeah, a couple of years ago, I started dressing up my Maltese rescue that I was fostering in little doggy clothing, and it was actually really useful: we had a couple of people looking for a dog to adopt, and they came, then went, and then they didn’t come back. Well we started dressing our little Maltese in clothing, we took new pictures of her and posted them up on Dogster, and almost immediately she had a lot of emails coming in and was adopted within a week through a great rescue group! It was pretty magical …it seems that with dogs, people fall in love through their eyes, and then that’s pretty much what seals the deal! Some would say that’s a sad fact, but it is what it is, so I say we use that to these little guys’ advantage
