Dressing chihuahuas in cute costumes and clothing is always fun, but Halloween is extra special because you can really go all out in choosing a costume for your little dog. With a bit of imagination, your little dog can undergo a complete makeover and become Frankenpooch for October 31st! Imagine your little chihuahua greeting the trick-or-treaters at the door dressed up like a pirate or a cute little tank! The possibilities are endless.

Common chihuahua outfits for Halloween are the classic hot dog costumes, with the bun and the strip of ketchup and mustard. Those were big years ago. Lately, the witch and the devil have been popular costume choices for the chihuahua crowd. When your precious little dog shows up at the door dressed as a little minion or a devil, people just melt. Chihuahuas in Halloween costumes are difficult to ignore!

As I said, I think the best costumes are hand-made, but sometimes you need a starting point. Our own store has a line of Halloween shirts and costumes for chihuahuas:

The Halloween chihuahua shirts and hoodies you’ll find there can be a good starting point, but again, if you want to dress up your little dog in something special that sets her apart from all the other little dogs out there, you’re going to have to invest a bit more energy and start getting creative with your little chi’s costume. It’s the same as it is with human Halloween costumes: buying something pre-made will get you to a certain point, but if you really want to wow your friends and create an impression with the costume your chihuahua wears at that Halloween part you’re at, you’ll probably have to think about your little dog’s personality and figure out a way of externalizing that into a costume.

All of the major chihuahua clothes retailers online are selling Halloween costumes for little dogs right now, so it’s not that hard to find a starting point for your chihuahua costumes for October 31st. You’ll even find some decent Halloween costumes for chihuahuas at your local pet stores. You might have to look through a few different stores, but you will find them. Some chihuahua owners tell me the costumes sold in the traditional stores are more expensive, but I don’t always find that to be the case. So check it out and see for yourself. I will say that you definitely have more selection when you shop online and you’re picking out your chihuahua’s costume from the comfort of your home, however!

The way I look at things, through my skewed version of dog fashion reality: what better way is there for me to celebrate Christmas time than to dress up my furry best friend as one of Santa’s little helpers with one of the best dog Santa outfit costumes I’ve ever seen?

I’m having a hard time come up with one, to be honest!

Yes, I’ve got a Christmas tree. And yes, my chihuahuas and their bigger dog friends seem to be loving the smell of every needle! But while I was decorating the thing, my dogs could only be described as waltzing around the tree, looking up at me, and wondering “papa, what can I do?” I’m telling you: they were begging for a job to do. But without opposable thumbs and the nimble dexterity to not fall into the tree and wipe everything out when standing on their hind legs and attempting to decorate the tree, they were exactly the prime candidates for being my Christmas tree decorating buddies.

Still, I don’t want to just leave them hanging. So what DO they do well? Well I’ll tell you this: my chihuahuas are darn cute, and I’ll be damned if I don’t put that to use!

At the Chihuahua Shop, we got these adorable dog Santa costumes a few ago–which actually come in sizes for just about every breed of dog out there that you would dress in clothes! And so I decided that all my doggies, big and small, would become Santa’s little helpers this Christmas. So I got them all a little Santa costume, and I have to say: they look freaking adorable (and hilarious!) all dressed up as Kris Kringle, scurrying around the tree!

The dog Santa outfits themselves are beautiful. They costume is a soft red velour Christmas coat that comes with a hood and white fleece lining that finishes off the look beautifully and gives your dog that authentic dog-elf look. Santa would be proud!

Of all the small dog clothing you can find for chihuahuas and shih tzu and yorkies and Maltese, costumes for small dogs have got to be the most fun. Browsing around the GW Little store lately, I’ve been indulging in a little dog shopping fun for my pet pups over here, picking out a few chihuahua clothes for their upcoming birthdays and a few small dog costumes for when I need a laugh and I decide to dress all my little doggies up in costumes for a day, just to create a strange and bizarre atmosphere in my house and have some fun to break up the monotony of the day.

Something a little weird I’ve been noticing about the different breeds of small dogs is that each one has it’s own dog costume “niche”–if you will–that works best for it. The chihuahuas have a few types of chihuahua costumes that work best with their short hair and huge bulging eyes; the yorkies have their costumes for yorkies that go with their tiny toy dog, formal, quaint look; the shih tzu have their onw little shih tzu costumes that work best on them, with their super long hair and that whole ancient Chinese thing going on; and the Maltese have a certain type of Maltese costume that works best with their adorable, cute little white faces. If you pay attention and you see a lot of little dogs wearing costumes for teacup dogs over and over again, I think you’ll notice this, that each breed has its own style.

More than any other type of small dog clothing costumes my chihuahua owner friends talk about when they get together, it’s the funny dog costumes that tend to dominate our conversations about chihuahua clothing and pet costumes. Smaller dog costumes that have that funny twist are just more entertaining and hilarious than the bland puppy costume, or the little doggie costumes that make an honest effort at being serious and respectable. When you dress up your little dog as a bumble bee or as crocodile prey in the middle of being devoured, or as a lion with a costume that has a huge main of lion hair that frames your chihuahuas head, you take your little dog’s cuteness and you add a humor element to it that just pushes everything over the top with dog owners and you make it almost impossible to look at your small dog without busting a gut and laughing your ass off! It’s great!

Costumes for small dogs are usually not that expensive if you shop at the top pet stores online. My favorite place to go right now when I want to pick out a new outfit is the costume for small dog section of GW Little’s online small dog boutique. It seems that most of the toy breeds today are destined for a life of lavish treatment and pampering, spent dressed in the most elaborate chihuahua costumes we’ve ever seen in the pet world.

The hardcore chihuahua owners even take it to the extent of making their own costumes for their chis, crafting ornate designs for their dogs and decorating them with ornate trim and expensive crystals and jewels. It’s quite a scene!

But the majority of us turn to the chihuahua shops and stores around the net and in our local pet supply stores to find these costumes for our chihuahuas. It’s not uncommon to see the kind of outfits you see in the video above, ranging from the mildly funny to the outrageously creative and insanely funny dog costumes.

Some people will argue that it’s cruel to dress your dog in costumes in like these. I am not one of them. I think as long as your little toy dog is comfortable in the clothes and his movement isn’t hindered in any way by them, then no harm done. I think these can also help with their socialization, as generally when you dress your little dog in a chihuahua costume, more people are going to want to come over and interact and play with and pet your dog, which provides you with ample opportunity to guide your dog in these situations from a young age.

Any way you slice it, fun chihuahua costumes are a hit all around. They provide us owners with a little amusement, they give our cute little doggies something to wear and show off and use to draw in more people to interact and socialize with, and at the end of the day, all of the smiles and laughs and good energy that these funny dog clothes put out into the universe is a very positive thing, if you ask me Cheers, friend -Mikey

I was seriously considering writing another article for this little site about chihuahua clothes that would have taken these costumes for dogs seriously; but how would you start that?  “Ahem, today I have a very important issue to discuss with you: the topic of dog costumes…”  I don’t think so. Dog costumes are perhaps the truest sign that the universe has a sense of humor: some of my hardest laughing moments where caused by a dog walking by in an outlandish or ridiculous costume of some sort. So for fun, and to honor what I think is the true nature of these little costumes for our K-9 friends, let’s have a look at a few typical dog costumes today and discuss the qualities of these funny and fine dog costumes:

The Superman dog. I love these superhero dog costumes: they’re so easy to get your dog into. They typically hang on the front of your dog’s neck, and they give the appearance that your dog is really a little being with arms and legs and the whole bit. The first time you see one of these little dog costumes, you are doomed to an almost fatal laughter; that is to say that you will probably laugh so hard that you won’t be able to breath for a minute or two. I hope you have a good lung capacity!

While we’re one the subject, it needs to be said: superheroes work in teams. What better than to dress up the entire pack in super hero attire? Now, these hero dog costumes are normally intended for a laugh on Halloween, but why not bust these out on a monthly basis? Why not take the Halloween dog costumes out of the October box and make one day each month for dressing your dogs up, each in super hero clothing, and walking them down the street with absolutely no explanation whatsoever? People will look, some will take pictures, and you’ll create a moment in the universe of absolute hilarity. What could be more fun on a dull, overcast Sunday afternoon than walking down a busy street with a pack of German shepherds dressed to the K-9s in costumes for big dogs?

Is that Simba? Or is that a pit bull? It’s so hard to tell these days, especially when the latter is wearing the former’s costume! Seriously, if you were to walk down the street with your dog wearing the lion dog costume, I suspect you would end up scaring a great majority of the people you’d pass on the sidewalk. You’d walk by and as the other person’s peripheral vision came to noticing the maine of this beast passing by beside them, they’d have that instinctive freakout reaction of “..??.whaATTT THE HECK IS THATTT!!? AHHHhh…ooh,… just a dog.. ahem.. I knew that,.. haha, just kidding!!.. I was just kidding, ahahaha. What a cute little doggy woggy in his dog lion costume…” (adjusting his neck tie and wiping sweat from his brow.) Can you imagine the fun this could be if you coupled this with a digital camera in hand, recording video of these walk-by reactions? It could be quite fun! At any rate, these animal costumes for dogs are very cool in that they definitely suit our little furry beast and can look very real for a few seconds while your mind figures out exactly what you’re looking at. Just check out this next one:

Ah, the skunk-dog. Should I run? Should I bend down and pet him? I just can’t make up my mind! Normally, I take off when I see a skunk, but there’s just something so. damn. cute. about this one! Maybe it’s the wagging fluffy white tail, or maybe it’s his adorably huge proportions–it is no matter: the important thing is that this dog is freaking cute in his skunk costume!

Ah yes, the food inspired costumes for our dogs. These are always good for a laugh; I just hope the Chinese aren’t watching when I dress my dog up like this! I kid, of course, but seriously people: dogs are not food! And don’t you dare let me catch you dressing your wiener dog dachshund in a hot dog costume; that’s just garishly over the top.

Ah yes, who could resist the McHappy Meal pack? You’ve got Mr. Big Mack over there, the Jack in the Box dog, the Mr. Supersize Fries pooch, and the slaving line cook over there on the left! What a team! I’m not sure you’d want to actually dress them all like this at the same time and walk them together because you might actually send people into cardiac arrest on sight with something as ridiculously, absurdly funny as this… You’ve been warned.

How adorable: the Johny football star quarterback dog costume. I have one of these for my little chihuahua and it is darling. Sports have never been that important to me, but I’d be a lot more stoked about getting involved with them if my dog were running around with little costumes for dogs like this on! You can find these in just about any sport,so if you’re into hockey, there’s a chihuahua clothes hockey costume out there, or a tennis one if you’re into rackets, shorts, and Polo shirts…

This is one of my favorites, although I can’t say the same for the dog wearing it here… he doesn’t look too impressed, does he? I think the whole “oh my god–my dog is being eaten by a crocodile” effect could be enhanced significantly if you could train your dog to take off running on command, while also barking loudly. If you could also train your dog to jump into the river and swim across to the other side and then keep running through a busy pedestrian street with this thing attached to him, water dripping off and everything, I think you might just be the next YouTube star…

Ah, the sweetie pie costumes. The princess dog costume would have to be one of the most popular among little dog owners. I cannot tell you how many little yorkies and chihuahuas I have seen in the past month dressed up in medieval princess costume like this!

And what dog wardrobe is complete without the bride and groom matching set? Seriously, if you have two little dogs, one a boy and the other a girl, you have to get these for them: this is the prima ballerina of dog costumes for small dogs, and getting this set is actually required by dog costume law, in fact.  If you’re caught without these two too-cute costumes in your possession, well, …you’re in trouble, I hear. If you love people to swoon and screech at your dogs’ cuteness, then just train them to quietly green your guests at the door and dress them up in these matching dog outfits. It is certain to be a hit.  Among the pug costumes you can buy out there, this one takes the formal wedding cake, hands down.

For extra bonus points, try taking your dog into a crowded elevator while he’s wearing any of these clothes: you’re sure to be a hit.  Lol.
